Is there anyone else here with a sailor that had PIR in 11/12/10? Our sailors are apparently in orientation for a few weeks. I would love to connect with others on the same path. I already miss our PIR group!

My son was in this same group, Div 368. He arrived in Goose Creek on Saturday, but I understand that more are still coming from this same graduation date. My son was telling me today that his Tech school wont start until early December. Today he and other sailors with him spent the morning doing yard work, edging and hedging. :-)
My husband and more from his division (DIV 369) will be flying in on Wednesday at 2am to Goose Creek. Then he will attend a briefing to move me up there. Some say it will happen Thanksgiving weekend, but then not. So i'm waiting until I get a go ahead from the Navy and move my butt up there! If not, i'll be going to Charleston Thanksgiving weekend and spend it with him.
Oh, I forgot to mention my sailor/daughter was in div 366.

She just sent me her temp address.
I know lucky labellaleigh has heard from her Sailor already but as anyone else?
My daughter and I have been texting back and forth and there has been at least one phone call since she got to Goose Creek.
I finally got to talk to my Sailor.. He didnt get to go to SC with the others he is in holding at IL still.. Hopefully he will be there this weekend though!
Yes, my son has text and called fairly regularly. So glad we took his cell phone to him at the airport in Chicago. I am planning on sending him some home-made fudge over Thanksgiving. It is his favorite.
Hi, y'all, my son was held a few extra days but called his dad yesterday to say he was now in Charleston! For us, that is only two hours away from home, about 50 miles outside of his travel radius for now. Trying to figure out Thanksgiving b/c most of the family has to be back at work on Friday. Would love to be able to cook a meal for some extra sailors, since we're so close. We could actually do most of the cooking at home and bring it with us. Wish we knew his duty for Thanksgiving so we could know what to do! Looking forward to everyone's insights, this group sure helped me get through boot camp.
I think including some of the sailors for Thanksgiving would be a great idea. Probably the best way would be for your son to ask around and coordinate it from there. We live on the west coast, so I know we cannot do anything. Looking forward to seeing our son at Christmas.
Good Morning!

My sailor was PIR on 11-5-10, and arrived in GC on Tuesday, 11-9-10.

I am just a week ahead of your PIR.

We left on Sunday after PIR, so we were not able to pass any electronics to him at the airport.

As soon as we got his address on Thursday, we overnighted his cell and a laptop(one of those baby ones) We bought a baby one to travel with and sent him one.

The overnight mail got to GC on Saturday, but my sailor said mail room only open M-F. He was able to pick up his package on Monday. So do not pay xtra $ for overnight if it is going to be there on the weekend.

As most of you may know he is in a suite with 2 rooms, 1 room mate and another room with 2 suite mates and a connecting bathroom.

Gotten many texts and phone calls. The other moms are correct poor cell reception, if any, in the dorms.

With a computer he has signed up with facebook and were able to chat via FB. We next tried Skyping, but having difficulty with my microphone. This seems to be the norm with SKYPE, it takes a few times to get it all working on both ends. While we were trying to get it going, we were able to communicate via FB chatting. That was helpful since no cell reception in his room.

He bought a bike in North Charleston - Walmart to get around the base, but got a flat tire riding back to base, says lots of broken glass and junk on the sides of the road, he won't be riding to town. He is looking forward to riding around the base, he says lots of trails and he is very happy with the base, he says it is beautiful.

Subway is on base and he went to eat there one day, as he was hungry after briefing class and did not want to go to the chow hall. So I may send him a gift card for Subway. I asked what other restaurants on base, he said he didn't think there were any more?

Many of the Moms have been discussing money management with their sailors, mine tells me he is going to see the financial counselors (?) on base or at the credit union(?) and take advantage of the services. I recommended he ask about a plan for a car, since he will need one in about a year for prototype school, as no base housing is provided, especially, if he goes to Ballston Spa, NY.

This past week he has been in briefing, not exactly sure what this is, sounds like A school orientation?

I am going to visit my son the first weekend in December. I will take pictures and post them to share with you all. I just love hearing him and being a part, experiencing this new chapter in his life.

Have a good weekend, will post soon!

Josie,
Thanks for the post. It was a wonderful peek into life there is SC.
Diana:

Thank you! I always enjoy reading about the actual experience, this site has been "dead on" for knowing what is going on.

My family laughs, but when I say the Mom's blog said - they come to attention, because they know my information has been good!

Enjoy your weekend!
