Hello all,

This is my first time since the look of Navy for Moms has changed. I am not so sure that I like it. I got used to the way it used to look. How about y'all? Do y'all like the new look?

My son is in power school. He will graduate this summer. I am so proud of him. I know that it is challenging for him. If he keeps pushing, I know that he can make it.

I haven't been on Navy for Moms for awhile.

@NCNarrator : I think you may be on to it. For me, it doesn't make sense that anyone would doubt my son's sincerity, especially for something as serious as passing a PFA. But, your explanation seems plausible. My son says the chief is extremely athletic and would emphasize that he is ten years older than my son and could do what my son was having problems doing. Anyway, thank goodness for his buddies.

@MM3 -- Even though my son is handling the material overall, he has been disappointed in some of his scores. He is now in that class that everyone says is a bear, and he commented that he'll have difficulty understanding something that becomes clear once they start working on the material just beyond it. He's learning to have patience and persistence, something he didn't always have in high school. I am so amazed at how much he's grown.

Good day everyone! CO-twin, prayers for a speedy full recovery for you. I can tell you that my son is very well adjusted in power school, after he almost didn't make it through A school. He says the material is not difficult but the amount of it is unreal. The second part of school gets more complicated by the second. At this point he's got 8 weeks to finish. He's very positive that he will make it to graduation set for June 6. Sometimes his test scores are great, sometimes not so great, but the important thing is that he passes. Sometimes he gets disappointed with his scores, as he's not used to low ones, but I always tell him not to be so hard on himself, a passing grade is a passing grade regardless. He's got very good friends that support each other, and that makes me happy. In 4 days is his one year anniversary from the day he left to bootcamp. Hope your son is doing great in power school.

LadyGoggle - The chief sounds like he needs a vacation...or retirement.  It occurred to me that the chief may have thought your son wasn't taking the run seriously until the consequences started to hit, and so when he did take it seriously that was when the improvement came.

I think people who are naturally athletic don't understand how hard it can be for those who aren't. I decided this last month that I wanted to do a triathlon next year as part of my weight loss goal.  The swimming and biking?  No problem, I swam competitively most of my life, and spent years with my bike as my only transportation.  The running?  No.  I've NEVER been able to run.  My body just doesn't get what it's supposed to do.  The trainers at my gym are struggling to help me figure it out, and I know that once I do I'll get much faster.  I had the same problem teaching some people to swim - their bodies and brains don't always synch up.

On the plus - the connections these kids make are incredible.  My son was in marching band in school, and those were the first true friendships he enjoyed, but at GC he's got a close-knit group that really supports each other.  Even more than finding his niche in the Navy and enjoying his choice (even the stress and aggravation), I'm ecstatic that he's found those friends!

Boy wonder mom. How is yourson finding power school. Mine is fascinated with what they are learning. He likes their chief. I guess he also is doing some volunteer work on weekends. He said a school they are tough on you, power school is Noreen relaxed atmosphere.

LadyGoggle,I'm sure your son will find kinder humans throughout his journey in the Navy. My son is in power school, and he's got nothing but respect and admiration for his chief. As Co-twin said, is probably not personal, but nothing excuses a nasty behavior towards anyone. Congratulations to your sailor and his amazing scores, the best to him :)
Comment by LadyGoggle on April 4, 2014 at 10:13pm

@Co-Twin: It did occur to me that the chief was suspicious and not targeting him. I guess many people would find it weird, especially when he suddenly is able to run a minute faster (yes, that's how much faster changing his stride made him.) But, you would think he would have coached him more rather than calling him names and deriding him. Anyway, I am so glad he won't have this chief when he moves to Power School. @carolb : you give me hope that his next chief will be more supportive.

Thanks for your feedback!

LadyGoggle, Wow!! I could have written your post right up until the part about the chief. It's obvious to me, our boys are not in the same class. My son's chief has been nothing but encouraging with him.His class mates are helpful too. They taught him how to run. Each time he runs now it is a little faster. He was very excited to run and finish his first 5k. I never thought I would hear those words from him.

To all, thank you all for all the posts and the knowledge and support! !

Lady google. When my son was in a school there was a situation where one sailor lied for another on the PFA. Both got captains mast. The one that lied got it worse. Then there was the cheating s candle. It may be the Chief was suspicious because of past instances. Bet it is not personal. On the other side how great his fellow sailors helped him, really awesome.

PattiP,

My son has told me the chief has been in 10 years and is out in one more year. Burn out, maybe? Still, I feel so disappointed that my son has to experience anything less than excellence and support from the higher ups. I don't want him to become cynical, any more than he already is.

I have been so relieved that he is surrounded by such fine fellow students. They all deserve the best experience the Navy has to offer them. And they will give their best in return.
