Hi all, I am wondering if anyone here has a sailor that started power school today. I would like to know the expected date of graduation, but I am well aware that it can change at anytime. My son is very causal about reporting such details but if the 24 week rule is correct that puts them at the week of Thanksgiving and we all know how crazy traveling that week could be. My son seems to think it is before Thanksgiving but with so many holiday weekends between now and then I thought it might be a week or so after that?

Blstz822 a person who worked very hard the whole time and put in their best effort but lets say their mind just could not grasp the material or they still could not keep up, will the best deal from the Navy.   They go to an academic board, sometimes they get another shot at the comp exam or if they do move on to something non nuclear, they take good care of people like that.  I hope everyone succeeds but my advice is if things start to look no  too rosy, make sure you go down still swinging, to use the boxing analogy. And if he does go to the academic board have a fresh haircut and make sure the uniform is starched and stand tall.  My son had a classmate at nuke ET A school who made it almost to the end and was well liked and a squared away sailor, everyone knew him as a hard worker, he turned out fine.  As my son said, they are still the smartest people in the Navy.

You might try calling one of the ombudsmen - phone number (843) 514-4948.  There is additional info at this link: http://www.netc.navy.mil/nnptc/  about what the ombudsman can help you with.   When I called and asked a question recently, they researched the answer and called me back within an hour.

Ok -- maybe I shouldn't have asked.  Now I am more nervous.  Just waiting on the phone call.  He has worked very hard, putting in a lot more than the required study time.

Comment by William in Nashua on June 16, 2014 at 12:31pm

Blstz822 if a student did not graduate A school he would  be reassigned to train for some non-nuclear rating.  A this point he has nor earned a rating yet, that was what A school was for.  Depending on the circumstances, he might be given an opportunity to study for  another technical rating, or be sent to an A school for a  non-technical rating, or might even be sent to the fleet as undesignated.   The Navy puts them in a new job and they have to serve out the remainder of 4 years.  The sailor is   administratively reduced to pay grade E1 or E2  until they have been in the Navy long enough to make E3 again.  Best of luck to your son.

The Nuke school is in Goose Creek which is a bit inland and northish of Charleston. Google map it. I think it might be considered North Charleston. I think your husband goes to make arraignments for the housing there on base. There is an office for that there. All of nuke school is in the same place so you should be set for the two+ years there, unless he goes to Balston Spa, NY for the last part, Prototype. But not all go there, My son is staying at Goose Creek.

My husband is currently at boot camp in great lakes. He is going to be going to nuclear field "A" school in Charleston directly after. We recently found out that I am able to move there immediately when he starts rather than our previous incorrect knowledge of a 6 month waiting period.

How soon after he arrives at "A" school will I be able to join him? I guess my question is how soon do we get housing?

Does the Navy provide moving arrangements for me? (As I live in Florida)

Where exactly is the "A" school and the housing communities? Are they on the Joint Base in Charleston or elsewhere?

Would love to get some answers. I can't find much online and obviously can't speak with my recruit that often. Thanks SO much for your time!!!!
