This is the day (Throwdown Thursday) that my daughter rolled from 15-10. NNIGN. I don't want a phone call from her tonight or tomorrow! I know she's in a better state, both physically and mentally than she was, so I'm hoping she'll do well today. She did tell me that she no longer "shakes in her go-fasters" at the sight of DI's, so that's good.
She will do great. We are all sending positive thoughts her way. You won't hear from her until Sunday!
Depends on the DIs. They may get a 3 minute phone call this Sunday, but maybe not. If the call comes, be prepared for a tired, hoarse voice. Ask questions and be as upbeat as you can. The last week has been very tough on them and a huge culture shock. Give them all your love and support...let them know how proud you are of them.
Hi
I,m Sharon. My Son started OCS March 28, 2010 in Newport RI.
I,m at a loss about everything. When do we send letters and where to?
When do we start planing and making reservations for the graduation?
As you see uninformed, thats me.
Any help or just knowing someone else in the same situation would be great!!
Thanks
Sharon
Also send pictures of family and pets, if you have any. They can post these in their room soon. We sent newspaper articles about things we thought he would like....sports, etc.
There will be a letter after 16-10 to indicate which group they are assigned to. My son was in 12-10H. Ask when you speak with them...that is the only way to find out.
Welcome Sharon! My son started with this group, too. Browse all the posts and you will learn a lot. I've sent you a message.
Sharon, welcome aboard. My son graduated in class 12-10 last week. Twelve weeks ago, I felt just like you do now. This site is a wonderful resource for information. If you don't find your answers on the 16-10 forum, check the forums for the past few previous classes (15-10, 14-10, 13-10, 12-10) for information.

Letters can be sent now. The class usually is allowed to receive and send mail in the second week. There is no set rule about it. It will vary from Company to Company, depends on the Company DI (same holds true for phone calls). They don't get mail on weekends. Address letters to:
OC Lastname, FI. MI.
Officer Candidate School
Class 16-10 [Golf or Hotel]
Officer Training Command Newport
291 Kollmeyer St.
Newport, RI 02841-1641

When you talk to your son, ask him which company he's in (Golf or Hotel) and add the company name after the class number in the address. Until then, just use Class 16-10. He'll still get the letters. Write as often as you can. They really really REALLY appreciate mail, more than they ever imagined. They have no access to any news outside of OCS, and they are starving for information about what's going on outside their bubble. I tried to write at least 5 letters a week. When I ran out of topics, I sent cards, newspaper clippings, comics, stories from the Internet, sports scores, family photos -- anything that fit in an envelope in hopes that he would always have something at mail call.

As to graduation plans, it's much too early to book plane tickets if you'll be flying. Most airlines (except SouthWest) will charge you significant fees if you have to rebook. I think most of us "old timers" would agree that it's best to wait till your son hits Candio phase (the last 3 or 4 weeks) to book flights. But you can reserve hotel/motel now and cancel without a penalty if plans change. By my calculations 16-10 would graduate June 18. Newport appears to be a very popular tourist area and may be crowded by summer, so you might want to reserve the lodging.

Hope that helps get you started. Good luck to your son. Hang on for a wild ride!
Sharon - my daughter had requested copies of the 10 day forecast from Weather.Com. They have no access to news, weather, etc., so at least knowing the forecast is helpful.
No phone call for me today!
Just remember...no news is good news! Maybe next Sunday there will be a call. And rest assured...they are in good hands.
The mantra "No News is Good News" is really one to live by as an LO. When they are going through RLP (room, locker, personal inspection), Outpost and academics (try to stay awake through class when you only have a couple hours sleep), ORLP (officer RLP) - if you don't hear anything, they probably made it through. Phone calls mid week may mean (but not always) that they rolled (didn't make it through one of the above, and dropped into Holding - if so, they will roll back into a new class coming up) Although we lived for those Sunday calls, we started praying "please don't call, please don't call" during the week when we knew they were undergoing these particular challenges :-)
