My son will be graduating from OCS May 13, 2011. I'd like to know if there is a limit on the number of family/friends attending graduation.  My son's grandparents are planning on surprising him. Since they are in their 80's; family members are driving them from Connecticut to RI for the event. That will add extra numbers to our group.  Thanks for your help

As far as I know there are no limits on attending graduation.  You may have trouble with the "surprising" part... I'm not positive, but I think that anyone entering the base needs to have their name on the pass list at the gate. Anyone driving their car onto the base needs to be able to show registration and insurance info. And no cell phone use by the driver while on base. Good luck with your plans!
Thank you Dmarie! That does help a lot. Does everyone in the car need to be on the list or just the owner of the vehicle? Well, if we don't get to surprise him at graduation it will still be a surprise for him once he finds out. The reason they are wanting to surprise him is they were not able to be at his wedding 4 years ago and have never met his wife or seen his little boy - now 15 months old. I think this is their way of making up for that.

Hi Country Girl,

Our son graduated in class 03-11 and he had to submit the names of everyone attending in our family - they had a list at the gate and asked for photo IDs. Hope you have a wonderful time - it's an extraordinary experience for the new Ensign and his/her whole family - bring extra kleenex and lots of room on the camera chip!

You mean no cell phone use while driving on base? Or at all?
I think it could be everyone in the vehicle. Maybe someone more knowlegeable than me might chime in. Perhaps if you are in contact with someone that has a member of the class, maybe their names can be added to the pass list via another classmate. (follow that?) and each person needs to present a photo id. Better to know these things now than to find them out on May 12!
Our son just graduated March 11th.  Yeah!  They only checked the driver's license of the driver.  We had 7 in the van at times.  We went to all the events from PNR to "HI MOms", morning family run on graduation day which was changed to watching "sand pit" drills at 6AM, to graduation, moving stuff out, and even shopping at the Navy Exchange the next day for gifts for those attending.  To be sure you could  give their names, but only my husband driving and the driver of the other vehicle, as we had 10 attending, were ever checked.  Have a GREAT time!  it is the most AWESOME experience, do it all!!!
Was this "Great Lakes" or OCS in Newport, RI?  Thanks for the information!
It was at OCS in Newport.  Sorry for the delay in answering!  Our Ensign surprised us by showing up last Sun. and ships out to Japan the day after Easter!  We are enjoying the time with him as is everyone else .  Busy!!!!
Just getting back to reading all of the posts since our son's Commissioning with the 08-11 OCS class!  It was awesome!   Even with my bum back we had a fantastic time.  So what do you want to know while it is fresh in my mind?!!  No limits on graduation, but the LO does need to know who and total number for the gate list and graduation.  We arrived on Weds. because I had heard from this website that sometimes the Candi-O's get liberty, and we didn't want to miss a second with him!  He was able to get permission to pick us up and to visit for a bit.  Later that eve they were granted on base liberty so we went back to visit with him.  Thurs. is the PIR(Pass in Review) at 2:00 and then they were on liberty until Hi Mom's cocktail reception at 5:30.  So a bit of rushing back to change into more dressy clothes but it was great.  Excellent job on the appetizers!  Then we made reservations for a light dinner at 8 or 8:15.  Friday was really early!  Up at 4:15 to be at sand pit for 5:15, to see one of their 10 minute intense workouts("beatings").  The 5:00 run was cancelled due to the rain, and as we arrived so was the workout.  So off we went to the chow hall to see "eating by the numbers" at 5:30.  We were back to the hotel by 6:15 and getting ready for the graduation.  Grabbed a quick breakfast and got there by 8:00 to save seats.  We were about 4 rows back, so if you want to be closer, you need to be earlier.  Honestly it was easy to take photos from our seats, but, BUY the official ones so you can enjoy the event!  Then you wait for the official group photo and the first salutes.  Then the LO's need to gather anything else from their rooms and so some paperwork. So by about 11:30 they are out!!  Then you can enjoy Newport and your new Ensign!!  Note to those looking for a gift we had a box engraved from thewoodstore.com that is perfect!!  Now he has a place for all the pins, bars, medals etc. He has put it to use right away.  The people at the shop were very helpful in designing it as well!  Also, bought him a small silver cross to wear on his dog tags (1"x1/2").  If there is anything else you want to know I would be happy to share what we learned.  Blessings to you all!

Thank you so much for the info.  I'm getting tears in my eyes just thinking about my son graduating!  This website is so helpful!  Your suggestion about the graduation gift is most helpful also.  My son graduates August 5 and it can't come soon enough!

Thank you again and blessings to you too!

Hi,

Can anyone that attended graduation give advice on what to pack? What is the attire for the day of graduation? I understand the Hi Mom's is slightly more formal and not sure for graduation? Dress pants, jeans, our LO's custom T-shirts??? Understand PIR is informal. (Limited luggage space)

Thanks!

Mary- PIR is informal you are correct,  and people were in everything from jeans to nice pants and sweaters, some men in sport coats.  That evening at Hi Mom's was cocktail dresses and jacket/tie for men.  The day of graduation was Sunday Clothes attire. Also, early am on graduation day, you may need layers if it is still cold and you opt to go see all of the outdoor stuff, before the "chow hall" experience. Enjoy the moment, it is awesome.  Congratulations to you and all the new Ensigns!! Hope that helps.
