I think it is a personal preference. My son didn't want anything (especially something he would need to pack) so we just paid for his flight home. Congratulations to your LO and your family.

We gave our son a Military Medal Keepsake Box. Engraved on top was a the Navy logo, his class number and the date.

Some gift the officer's sword or a watch (engraved or not), we gave our LO frames for his commissioning certificate and formal portrait.  Others give stitched garment bags for uniforms and some give a wide variety of keepsakes (etsy is a good source of ideas--do a search).  Some LOs aren't interested in anything.  Anything and nothing is appropriate.  It's all as personal as our officers.

We gave our son a nice, sturdy, large folding garment bag (luggage type) for his uniforms, and took it to graduation with us.    He had arrived at OCS with just a small carry-on suitcase, and they issue them a duffel bag, but there is no way they can pack several sets of uniforms, and boots, and hats, etc in that.  Lots of the families head to the local Walmart after OCS graduation for luggage to pack all the new Ensign's stuff!!!    We flew to graduation, so we packed some of our own clothes into the garment bag for the flight, then gave it to our son.  We also took with us another collapsible, folding suitcase for our him that I had stuffed empty into my own suitcase.  He had told us that he did NOT want to deal with a sword, so we opted for practical gifts.  He still uses the garment bag 5 years later when he travels with his uniforms, so I think that was a good purchase!   Even if you get your loved one something else,  luggage will be needed anyway!

BTW, the reception for the families is "Hi Moms" (as in "Hello Moms")  and not High Moms,--although most Moms are certainly high with pride at their son/daughter's graduation from the ordeal of OCS!!!! hahaha

I like the idea of the garment bag, where did you get yours?

karenmof2:  You can find garment bags wherever you would buy luggage, in a department store, etc, or search Amazon for "travel garment bag."    We got one that was 50-60 inches long when laid flat, and then folds over in half, and had snap straps to keep it folded, then it had a shoulder strap to carry it.   You want one where the clothes hangers are hooked over a bar inside, and not sticking out the top.  Get one that says it holds at least 3 suits/dresses.  Some even have extra pockets for shoes.

My son put his dress blues, whites, and khakis in the garment bag with his shoes and cover (hat.)  He then stuffed his camos and boots in his duffel bag. He stuffed every thing else in his small carry-on and another soft collapsible suitcase I had brought to him.  They have LOTS of stuff to pack when they leave OCS, so the local Walmart sells lots of luggage as well as the NEX (Navy Exchange Store) on base.  I wanted to be choosy about the garment bag, so I bought in advance and took it with us.

I just went to my son's graduation in April.  I felt bad because I hadn't even thought about a graduation gift ahead of time. I think the sword would be a great gift later on,  as they all want one, but packing stuff to leave is already a challenge. I had read the comment about a garment bag though,  so when we got there I asked. We went to the Navy store on base and bought him a really nice garment bag for $64. He was so grateful because he wasn't sure how he was going to pack everything. He was also worried about getting his suits all wrinkled because he had just spent so much on them. This solved his problems and was the best thing we could have gotten him. It was great for us,  because we could purchase it there, and didn't have to bring it with us.  He also asked for an extra pair of shoe inserts (also purchased there) and his dad paid for his card reader that attached to his computer to get into his navy account.  All purchased on base,  and all greatly appreciated.  I hope that helps.

Thank you such a good idea!
