Theresa9161,

Congratulations on your LO's upcoming graduation!  I know how proud you must be.   My daughter graduated OCS last June.  Hi Moms is an event held so that families can learn more about their LO's journey through OCS.  Ours was cocktail party style.  There were heavy appetizers and a cash bar.  You will have an opportunity to meet the instructors for the class and take pictures with your LO and their instructors and shipmates.  The class puts together a slide show and there are awards.  I wore a cocktail dress.  Many other moms did, too, but there were also dressy slacks and even one pair of jeans.  Men wore slacks and button down shirts, some with jackets, some without.  The graduation ceremony itself is less formal, but still dressy.  I wore a fairly conservative dress and heels.  Think - something you could wear to church.  Afterwords, the all important First Salutes, then more pictures.  I hope this helps.  I'm sure others will chime in to share their experiences.

Hi Theresa,  Welcome first of all.  The Hi moms event is not always a dinner it depends on the class and how they vote.  My son graduated in September and it was more of a coctail type party with finger foods and desert.  It is a very nice affair.  Dress was nice.  Some women wore dresses or nice pants outfits.  The men wore suits or dress shirt and pants.  It is at the Captains headquaters and had the atmosphere of a nice resturant.  Graduation was nice casual.  Don't forget you will want to take Lots of photos with your loved one.  It was a great few days and moments that I will always treasure.  When does your LO graduate?  Do you have a place to stay?  If you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask.  The best to your LO (loved one).  Lynn
Hi theresa9161 -- my LO graduated late Sept Class 21-10 Hi Mom's dinner was held at the Officers Club. The almost graduates wore their liberty whites. Most parents /guests wore nice clothes as everyone has already said. Their graduation was inside -the new Ensigns wore their dress whites - most attendees wore nice dress or slacks.. I wore a cocktail dress to Hi Moms and nice slacks/jacket to graduation. The pictures are great --  It was a great few days in Newport and my LO seemed much less stressed graduation morning. The Navy takes a group photo after graduation and 1 during the 'first salutes'. We took pictures of the occasion and they turned out great- especially outside. Enjoy your time in Newport and congratulations to your LO. Your LO class committee will decide the type of affair it will be, dress, where it will be held etc.-and your LO will let you know the details as they are decided. My LO didn't order the video of PIR and graduation but I went and ordered it anyway --wanted my Dad to see (Navy WWII- he went to boot camp at Newport) --and the video was great - saw them throw their hats up after graduation and a great view from the stage.

Just wanted to add that if your graduation is in the winter (Nov-March) it was so cold in the gymnasium where it was held that we never took off our coats!  So you could wear anything! Otherwise I agree with what the others have said-Hi Mom's was a mix of dress from cocktail to nice slacks and sweaters, some jeans.  The O Club is out on a point so with the wind blowing in Feb. it was COLD outside!

It is a wonderful, fun time, lots of pomp and ritual-we will never forget it

I was just at the 1/7/11 graduation.  Hi Moms is a reception at the officer's club the night before graduation.  They will serve nice appetizers and there is a no host bar.  There was a full spectrum of attire when we went.  I wore nice dress pants and a sweater but wished I had worn a cocktail dress.  Graduation is the most formal event and we all wore nice dresses. The officers will be in their dress blues with gloves, etc.  You will probably want to look really nice because there will be lots of pictures!  Congratulations to you!
