I've been conversing with some OCS moms who have been very helpful and I appreciate all of the information as my LO gets ready to enter OCS on May 9th (mother's day no less).  I learned that there's a new group every 3 weeks so if I've got it right and the March 28th group is 16-10, then May 9th must be 18-10.  I'm learning so much and curious if anyone has someone starting May 9th. The date is fast approaching!!

I have been lax in welcoming people, but welcome egbot, and best wishes to you and our family as you son enters OCS. Whatever Sunday it is they start is traumatic, although I will be thinking of you especially on mother's day! This site was my godsend while my LO was at OCS and hope that it helps you as much as it helped me get through this journey. As everyone has said on the other sites ask any question if one person doesn't know the answer the next will. Enjoy this next week with your LO.
Good luck to your LO in starting OCS. The first few weekas are the hardest, as many here can attest to. Start repeating the OCS mantra, "No News is Good News" because when something bad happens, you will find out pretty quickly. Start mailing letters this week, it will be a while before they can receive them, but they will appreciate them! Lean on everyone here, they are a wonderful group.
What a great idea! I"ll start writing tomorrow - he'll be so surprised! I can't believe we're so close to May 9th. It seems like this was a forever process (well, it actually was). Thanks so much for your help and guidance. This site is wonderful, but everytime I tell David something new I learned.... i get a little bit of an eyeroll!! But, I really think he likes that I'm so involved!
HI< CCW, I will tell my LO about this. I don't know if he is on the facebook site for 18-10, but I will absolutely tell him about that! Because mother's day is Sunday, I made reservations for a nice dinner Saturday night, but if he really wants to have dinner with some of his 18-10 classmates, I wouldn't complain! We're planning to leave around noon on Saturday and if we get to Rhode Island before 5:00 or so (we live in NJ), David may check in on Saturday. I wonder, though, once they check in... do they have to stay on base?
egbot - enjoy this week with your son and safe travels to Newport!
Thank you so much, 2! Yesterday we had a huge party for David and it was a blast! We had a cake in the shape of a submarine, american flags and red white and blue themed items all over! It's amazing what you can find - even tootsie rolls wrapped in american flag wrappers! Aside from having my LO clean out his room before he leaves (a monumental task), we've planned to have movie nights, eating out at a couple of his favorite restaurants and at his request - a spaghetti and meatball with garlic bread night - all prepared by his mom (that would be me)!!

BTW, his orders say he has to check in by 11:00 AM on Sunday. I thought we'd get him to the base by 9:00 AM. My husband says he should really check in on Saturday. How imperative is this? Does anyone know? What's the advantage of checking in a day early? If he checks in, does he still get to go back to the hotel with us until Sunday?
Check in for OCS is on Sunday morning only. I've been advised that there is no Saturday check in. Since you are driving up, enjoy the time with your son. We had breakfast at a place called the Blue Plate Diner in Middletown on Sunday (they have a pretty good menu) and arrived on base around 9:30.We've eaten at the diner at the circle too, not bad for a fast meal. Make sure you have your drivers license, car registration and insurance cards ready for the Base security at the gate. Follow the signs to OCS check in. We drove around "training country" and the base a bit to get the lay of the land and dropped our LO off at 10am. On the way home we hopped off the interstate and spent some time at the beach...Rhode Island has a pretty shoreline, and stopped at Pepe's Pizza in New Haven for pizza before the last leg home. (good pizza by Jersey standards).

The send off party sounds like it was a great time! Love the submarine cake! Now it is time to stay strong, stay healthy and stay focused! As I've seen written here and have lived myself, keep repeating "No News is Good News" (NNIGN). Have a safe trip and welcome to the Navy family!
Good Morning egbot,
As "2" said enjoy this week, wish I would have been smart enough to have my son go through his room before he left in November for OCS! Your party sounds great, we had a party for my son also and also what a wonderful time, what a great way for a send off.

Unless things have changed, the candidates aren't allowed to check in the night before, I believe there is a whole process that Sunday morning. I know when my son checked in they all went over as a group around 9:00 or so, like I said though things could have changed and I am sure others will chime in. A friend of ours who did OCS 40 years ago told my son a great story about checking in early (not a good thing) so when my son was at the airport he met one of the candidates who hadn't made a room reservation and offered to share his room with him, retelling the story. We all know things have change in 40 years!

Have a great week!
Wonderful! New York and Newport in one weekend - two of my favorite places! We've vacationed in Newport at least three times. It's lovely there. Have a wonderful family time and perhaps we will meet at some point!
Thanks for the info. I was feeling a bit selfish wanting to spend Saturday night together... you know, doing the "mother" thing by telling him he could go with his classmates. I was very pleased when he said he'd want to spend it with family!! 13 hours is a huge drive, ours is closer to 5 - much more doable. Enjoy your time with your LO and I assume I will be seeing most of the mom's at Graduation!!
After your LO checks in on Sunday they will go through their belongings and make them stash the stuff they can't take in someone's vehicle. I don't know how long this takes, but if you're dropping off your LO you might want to wait in the parking lot for a little bit. Has anyone else done this??
How terrible! I wonder where the "stuff" went if it was in a classmates car! Doesn't give one a warm and fuzzy feeling! If there is a way we can wait without being too obvious, I'd much prefer to do that. Our LO is only bringing things on the "approved" list, but if his civilian clothing has to be stored in a vehicle, I'd prefer it be stored in ours!
