Hi, Moms, Does anyone know how to get these tickets? Do I need to wait until my son sends me an invitation? Then there's the issue of picking them up at a certain location prior to arrival at the gates. Lots to learn here!

My son graduated in May. He gave names of those attending the graduation. There were no “tickets” to pick up. We went through gate 1 and our names were on a list for graduation. We showed IDs and we’re allowed through the gates. Once at the graduation there was another check in as we entered where we once again showed our IDs and vaccination cards. Your candidate will have all this information once it gets closer.

Thank you for responding with this precise information, Cathy. Now I don't have to comb the Navy and Navy Mom sites. Gate 1 is at the Newport, Rhode Island location, correct?

Another question: Did you get a hotel room right there in Newport? Did you have good accommodations? I currently have a reservation in Providence. It seems that is way too far from the base, so will have to change that. I am booking the room for the Thursday prior to graduation through Sunday. How long was your son available to hang out with you after his graduation?

Providence is pretty FAR from the base, and you will be making several trips back and forth during the weekend.  Search for hotels in "Middletown, RI."  Middletown is actually closer to the base than downtown Newport, even though the base is called "Naval Station Newport." (Look it up on a map.)   We stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in Middletown, and it was very convenient to the base.  Some parents stayed in Newport, but the hotels there are more "resort-type" (expensive.)    Middletown has more moderately priced places like Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, etc. and was actually closer.

My son commissioned in May, 2018.  We had 7 people, so I booked an Air BnB near base.  He was actually able to come and stay with us the night before the ceremony.  We had all day Saturday together and then we all had to leave to go back home.  Your son's time will depend on what his orders state.  What is his designation?

When you say he was commissioned, what does that mean? My son is graduating from Officer's Boot Camp, Andy'sMom. I have wondered how much time we will have together. I come in Thursday afternoon. He graduates Friday morning. My return flight is Sunday afternoon. Is there a common schedule that I can refer to in order to make plans? I considered going to the Zoo for a restful activity. What do you think?

OCS is Officers Candidate School.  It is where men and women get commissioned as Officers.  Some do that at the Academy, some thru ROTC, and some go to OCS.  All have to enlist prior to going to Newport. My son enlisted and a week later he was at OCS.  He had classmates who were Priors that decided to become Officers.  So, as some may refer to it as Officer's Boot Camp, it is Officers Candidate School. You did not say what your son's designation is.  Mine is a Naval Aviator.  He had time to go home, and was assigned a work order in his home town.  What your son has time to do will depend on what he plans on doing in his Naval career.  So, unfortunately no, there is no "common schedule".

Thanks for clarifying the terms. His designation is SWO--Surface Warfare Officer.

There is a good chance that your son will receive his orders upon Commissioning.  May of 2018 was cold and rainy! We drove around Newport, and that night he took his siblings out to party with his class members.  I remember he really wanted family and sleep!  Be fluid in your plans. Enjoy the weekend. Congratulations to you, your family, and most of all, your son. And thank you all for his service.

Your son celebrated and rested as he needed. Sounds like time well spent. I will let mine take the lead. And we'll see what his orders are. By now your son is well into his training to become an aviator. I wish him the best.

Definitely stay closer to base. We stayed at the quality inn in Middletown. Thursday-Sunday. Depends on where yours is headed next and when he has to be there. Mine was staying in Newport for Supply school so he had all weekend off and had to report Monday.
We ended up getting a second room for my son at the hotel. He wanted some alone time as they get none at OCS. Maybe look for an air bnb so you have multiple bedrooms for a lower price than the hotel would be.

I am so grateful for your advise. I found the Red Roof Inn and Suites in Middletown, and it has good reviews for the price.
