What is the Moms dinner and how formal is it?

Hi, My son graduated in sept and the Hi Moms event could either be a dinner or a nice cocktail party depending on what that class decides on. Ours was a nice cocktail party. Dress could be either dresses or nice pants outfits for the ladies. Jackets and ties or Jackets for the men. It is held in the officers club and has some great photo ops. It was a great evening to meet everyone from their class officers, DIs and others who were part of their 12 weeks at ocs. Also it was fun to meet everyone who we kept in touch with while our LOs were in Newport. (N4M and facebook) Best of luck and stay connected.
Lynn -

My son will start OCS on 1-30-11. I'm trying to determine when his graduation will be and what our travel plans will be. My husband must request time off from his job well in advance, so having this information now would be great. What day will we need to arrive at OCS, and how long should we expect to be there? Can you offer some guidance on this? Thanks! Tina
My LO graduted in late August class 19-10 and the Hi Mom's Dinner was moved from the Officers Club to a smaller location on base. There wasn't enough seating for everyone and it was crowded. I was amazed at how differently people dressed. I wouldn't say to go really formal, but you should wear a nice dress and men should wear a suit or at least nice slacks and a jacket and tie. There were, however, people inappropritely dressed in jeans and t-shirts (usually the teens). The food is more like "finger food" than a meal so some people actually had reservations to go out to eat afterwards! No matter what, you're there for your LO and it was really nice. Lot's of photo ops and there is a great photo collage of the class supposedly done by the class that graduates right after the existing graduating class.
Depending upon where you're coming from, you should get there on Wednesday (late afternoon is fine). Sometimes they'll have some leave time to spend with you. Thursday is the Pass in Review - more great pictures. Then you have some time until the Hi Mom's party. Get up really, really early on Friday to see them do the 1K run, and all the demonstrations, including the work outs and mess hall. You would have to be on base by 5AM! Then you go back, shower and go to the graduation ceremony. Festivities are usually over by noon on Friday.
I would suggest that you make the reservation now for the Navy Lodge. They get full very quickly. You can always cancel or change the reservation just in case (hopefully not), your LO has to go into "holding" due to an injury or infraction. Then they most likely will graduate with the next class and the graduation date will change.
Look at some of the sites on N4M and you'll get lot's of information. It was wonderful for me. Right now, my LO is in S. Carolina going to Nuclear Power School (for submarines). Good Luck!
Thank you so much for your advice. As far as the actual graduation date goes, would it be safe to say that my LO's graduation will take place on Friday, April 22, if his first day at OCS is January 30 (with the exception of him going into "holding")?

I hope your LO is doing well in Charleston at the Nuclear Power School for submarines. That is the next step for my LO as well. Tina
You really should not make any reservations this far in advance because things can and do change without any notice. Until your son actually checks in on Jan. 30th even his OCS start date can change. After your LO one starts OCS there are many reasons they could roll which would change their graduation date. My son is in his 7th week at OCS (Class 04-11) and we were just told that it is "probably" safe to make flight reservations but I'm still nervous about doing it. Of course hotel reservations can be canceled but the Navy Lodge doesn't make reservations this far out anyway.
This is all very true. I don't really know how far in advance the Navy Lodge makes reservations. Maybe also because there was an ODS graduation at the same time as my LO's, but the Lodge was full 10 weeks before the graduation! Not that it's such a big deal, we stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn about 5 minutes off base and that was fine. Maybe in the dead of winter, it won't be so bad. Good luck in whatever you do! Usually, once they become a candio... you can pretty much make those plane reservations! Have a save flight and enjoy every moment of the graduation procedures.
Thank you for the info. My son gradustes OCS on Jan 7,2011. He will be in Newport for 9 more months after that for Supply School.
My son is also graduating on Jan 7th. Are you a member of our facebook group for the 04-11 Class?
My daughter will be at Supply School then too! She reports back 12/9 but school begins 1/10. The Supply School is 6 months, not 9.
My son graduated in late Sept in Class 21-10 and their class committee held the 'Moms dinner' at the Officer Club. His class was small - only 42 new officers. The Officers Club was very nice plenty of room and the 'finger food' was very good. The Officer Candidates made many trips up to the buffet lines- the mini-hamburgers were a big hit. They had a few cakes for dessert - and they were gone in a short time. Dress as others have said is dressy - not really formal. Nice dress, pantsuit, would be appropriate. We ended up meeting the Class Officers and the Commander of the base while there. It was just a nice affair - it was nice to see the 'almost' commisioned officers in a relaxed setting. They all seem to enjoy talking to one another even trying to use their first names since they only knew 'last names' for OCS. It was a great evening with lots of great pictures.
As far as reservations - I made my airplane reservations about 6 weeks ahead - good deal - from Michigan. We stayed at the Navy Lodge - for convenience and made those reservations ~5weeks out. The Navy Lodge was very nice to stay at and and very close to all the festivities. We didn't have any problems entering through the gates - have ID for everyone in the cars. The day of their commissioning -- 'run' in the morning was cancelled due to the weather forecast. The new officers were a little disappointed but were glad to sleep in a few hrs!! It sounds like it would have been a lot of fun to see. It was a great few days. He did stay in Newport for school for a few weeks, and had a great time seeing the sights in Newport and Boston. He is now on the West Coast as a SWO Nuke.
Thanks, everyone, for your great advice! It's great to have your experience to call upon! - Tina
