Oh Shelly,
That is such a special story - it brought tears to my eyes. But you are right - what joy you gave to your sons.
Thanks for sharing!!
Good luck Cathy. I hope and pray everything works out well for you and your sailor.

Cynthia,
You are right - it does depend on where you are stationed as to whether you need a car or not. I was stationed in San Diego years ago and didn't own a car until just before I got out. I used to take buses or walk everywhere.

Gayle,
I will tell you from experience that rental companies will not rent cars to anyone under 25. I went round and round with a rental agent once that if my son is old enough to serve his country and possibly lay down his life for his country then he should be able to rent a car while home on leave. No dice - they would not rent him a car!!! Later son bought his own vehicle - a truck. On his first deployment he packed all his stuff in truck and drove it home to us because he couldn't keep a barracks room so we had to hold his stuff and I used his truck over the winter. Second deployment he had an entire apartment worth of stuff so he rented a storage garage and parked truck and all his stuff in it and went on deployment.

Gayle,
I know you said your daughter had such a long wait to go before she leaves for bc. My daughter was a depper for a little over a year and I always felt like it was so far away. Then before I knew it she was leaving in a week and I wondered where the time went. I felt like I still wasn't ready for her to leave!!!!!

Valerie,
Welcome!! My daughter also had a hard time doing the running portion of her pt. She is skinny as a rail but just didn't have the endurance. She would work out with her dep group but still just couldn't pass the run test before she left for bc. When it got down to that last week of bc she took her final pt test and failed the running by just a few seconds. They gave her a motivator to run with her on her second try and she passed!! We were sweating her passing that part of the test!! Also, you should be able to get your daughter's address from her recruiter just a couple days after she leaves. I had her address and sent off a couple letters to her before she even sent out her form letter!!!

Cathy,
Talk to his recruiter that processed him in. The recruiter can get your son's address before you even get that first form letter. Sometimes they don't always get to make the phone call. But just remember - no news is good news in bootcamp. Just keep writing him letters and then when you get his address you can send them all to him.

Yes April there are some Columbus moms here. We have had a couple get togethers and will be looking forward to seeing and meeting you at the next one. Keep watching for some info on it. My son is due to come home from deployment in a month or so and looking forward to that! Keep writing your son and stay busy yourself and enjoy what the Navy has to offer him. Anita
