Kaykay. Wow is right. Just because our children are in the navy doesnt mean we should never expect to see them. Thet are still family and if there is a desire and a way to see them then all the better.
Lori you have every right to go visit if you ca. We were thrilled to have our daughtwr home and for every phone call we get. Yrs they will be busy abd navy is more than a job but they do get leave at times so enjoy them when yoy can.

Oh I can visit my son on base? Really??? I didn't know that! I didn't know I could spend hundreds for a plain ticket and hotel room and food. Thanks for making me aware of that! Seriously? No. It isn't easy to go visit your child and for them to visit you. FOR A REASON. The military takes boys and makes men. Moms need to let go and not whine on message boards that they "won't ever see their son again". I'm sorry you think I am being nasty or whatever but I was initially trying to HELP Lori understand it isn't just being sent to sea that causes separation it is also where they are based. As moms we need to be strong and understand they have a job to do. Even IF a deployment was 54 months...that's the JOB they signed up to do. :) have a great night.

I think you are being a little harsh. Yes some new sailors do get shipped out as soon as they get assigned to a ship. I know because my son's ship was scheduled to leave 10 days after he arrived on ship and was out for seven months from August to March. I also know of sailors from his OS class that had to meet up with their ships already on deployment. Your son happens to be lucky at this point. I know how hard it is to visit when they are away and they don't always get to come home for the holiday. There is a rotating schedule they have to follow. I haven't had a birthday, thanksgiving or Christmas with him for two years now. He elected this past year to take his break over NewYears giving Chrisymas off to the sailors that had family with children!!! Since he is single with no children and I was extremely proud of him.

He has been on several short six week deployments also and has only been in for two years. Depends on your ship I guess.

You can visit your son on base. There are lodges on base he can make arrangements for you to stay. He will need to be present to check you in and to get you on and off base. I am going to visit my son in May. He was to be coming hone from s deployment that got cancelled thanks to the budget cuts!!!!

Also get ready for this one. They have to pay for all their medals earned and stripes earned each time there is a change. Which I think is ludicrous!!!! My personal opinion.

Oh well. The above is my experience I usually don't respond but I thought I needed to. I hood I didn't offend anyone that was not my purpose.

My daughter is an OS Stationed on USS Tortuga in Japan. She left last July and has been out to sea several times for various lenghths of time. When out at sea communication is very limited. She graduated BC last April and OS school in June. She was able to come home before Japan and also last New year for 9 days. She plans on being in Japan for her full 4 years at this point. She does likke her job.

No need to get defensive. I was just trying to help you see a little point most parents don't think about. My son has been an OS for a year and has yet to deploy. I think too many people have this false perception that their kid joins the service and heads rights out to sea. The ships need maintenance and down time. If your son gets sent across the country like mine then that is the reason you won't see him for a while. Not necessarily that he is on a ship for years and years. Understand? You really won't see him much regardless...expect to see him holidays. And that's it.

Lori my son is in San Diego and is an OS. The question you should be asking yourself is where will be be stationed rather than will he be on a ship for 54 months. My son being across the country has more impact on how often we see him. His ship goes on 1 week tours. With Obama's cuts I can guarantee you NO ships will be doing 5 year tours..it's unheard of. And you're looking at this wrong.

Thank you JDmom, I thought the time at sea would be more in that range! I'm so thankful for this site...I know it will be even more essential to me once he leaves for boot camp.

thanks!

Welcome to the group lori!  Your husband is right!  My son has been in the Navy for two years, he has had one 9 month deployment.  There is another one scheduled but not for a while. He has been very happy with his choice.  I am sure there are exceptions and you always run the risk of him being stationed in Japan or some other country but they are not "at sea" for years.   Hang with us the experienced Moms (and Dads) have been wonderful.  You will get through.

Hi Papaw67...my son graduated in Feb 2012 and is now in Mayport, Fl aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.  He is an OS also.  He loves it and is doing fantastic.
