Has anyone out there had their son/daughter fly out of Pittsburgh?  I am still trying to get an answer as to whether family (ME) is allowed to go to the gate.  I don't want to make it harder on my son but he's never flown or navigated the airport.  I know I am babying him but if the recruiter won't be with him, I'd like to be there.

My son flew out of Pittsburgh. His recruiter picked him up the day before and took them to the 911 air base. Then they were escorted to their plane by the recruiter. You will not be allowed to go to the airport to see him off. He will be officially under the controll of the US Navy. This is the beginning of his Basic Training. So, we had his friends and family come over and say good bye when the recruiter came to pick him up.

Hi, my son left last Sept. his recruiter took him down the night before he was to leave. We did not go to the airport, it was hard enough the day before dropping him off for all of us. I wanted to be with him the whole way also but he will be with others that are going to boot too. And no you can not go beyond security at the airport that is all the further you will be allowed to go. I hope this info helps, he will be okay. It is hard on both us and them when this day comes. My son is in Gulfport right now and we went down for a 3 day visit and it was so hard to leave him and not knowing when we will see him again. Hang in there and be strong for your son. God Bless and take care. Tracey

Thanks for the quick response.  Steven will be picked up on the 1st around 2:00.  I was told once he checks in at the hotel, he is free for the day as long as he checks back in by 9:30.  Since we live close to town I told Steven I could just bring him back home!!!! (I was kidding)  I guess I'll see if he wants me to come to the hotel and if he has found others that will be leaving with him, I'll just come home or maybe offer to take him and maybe other recruit who doesn't have family there out to dinner.  We will be going to the swearing in on the 2nd.  I guess we'll say our goodbyes then.  I keep taking deep breaths.  thanks again

My son left for boot from the MEPS (Mechanicsburg).

His recruiter took him down (over) and dropped him off.  We were not allowed to transport him at that point, so we (little son) and I drove down and stayed the night in a motel VERY close to the MEPS.  The next morning, we went to to the MEPS to "see him off".  (Against the recruiters wishes, mind you).  His recruiter was a "jerk" and gaffed at the idea of us going to see him off???? Really???? What did he expect I was going to do????  Good thing too, because they lost -or forgot to take- some medical record -or birth certificate or something and Momma was there to the rescue! (Was almost 6-yrs ago, so don't remember exactly)!  Anyway...it was a LONG day and a LONG process but I was there to console a "little" girl going off too that was distraut and crying!  Was also there to (((huggs))) some other sailors who didn't have family to see them off!  One of which ended up going the whole way thru with my son, from boot, A & C schools & 1st tour!  They (and we) are all still great friends to this day and keep in contact, via Facebook, almost daily.  (More than my sailor, at this point...but that's another story)!

Glad to see everything worked out OK for you Trace....you are in good hands with us Moms.

You can go with him and wait. The airline will give you a pass. It was ahard wait but happy we got to spend those extra minutes with him
