Hello! My name is Dawn L. (Ben's Mom Ship 11 Div 295 PIR 9/2/10) . Ben arrived at Fort Meade on September 7TH. He is at A-school studying mass communications. His classes began on Sept. 20th. He is doing well. Last week they had their cell phones locked up due to some abusing cell phone privileges. Ben got his back and was phased up and also got his computer and civilian clothes. The Navy was going to the Pentagon today. His uncle just arrived back in the states last week from Afghanistan. He and his wife live in Annapolis. We live in Tiltonsville, OH, along the Ohio River in Jefferson county. I would love to hear from some other Moms who have a loved one at Fort Meade.

Ok - as I think I keep remembering places in the DC area - if you plan on the Smithsonian for a visit - be sure to include the Air & Space Museum. I'm going to date myself - but it first opened when we lived up there. The walk through the space capsule & touching the moon rock (which I don't believe you can do anymore) are amazing. Not to mention the planes hanging from the ceiling!

I used to love going to the cemetery when we lived up there. It sounds morbid but it is so peaceful and awe inspiring! The guards at JFK's grave reminded me of the guards at Buckingham Palace. We were fortunate enough to be there once when they had the changing of the guards - at Arlington National Cemetery that is. I'm jealous though - wish I were going up there!

Hi - just joining this group - and I had to add to the comments on what to do/see in DC. We lived in Alexandria, VA for 3 years while I was in high school. On the must see list in the National Cemetery - it is beautiful!, downtown/old town Alexandria is a cool place - there's still cobblestone streets, the old submarine factory - has lots of small arts/crafts stores and of course Mount Vernon - George Washington's place. We actually went to hs at Mt. Vernon High School which is just down the road from the estate. It is so beautiful up there - I miss the cities & friends up there!

My son just got verbal orders for Fort Meade. Do they automatically live on base? My son got the impression that they were full on base and would have to live off base. What are the living conditions like on base? Any other tips I can give him would be great! Thanks!

Chris got his written orders - still in Maryland but not Fort Meade. He'll be inside the Beltway. Oy.

Chris now has his digital orders and should be finishing his last IT class today. Now he just needs his written orders and plane tickets. Yee-haw!

Chris doesn't have a driver's license, never has. We didn't own a car during his teen years (age 7-17) so it was never an issue. If Chris is to get a car, he will first have to go through driver's training from the beginning like a 15-year-old. And if I know him, he'll have "better things" to do with his money.

Okay, now I have some specific questions...

1) The NIOC website says all of their sailors have individual bedrooms off of a common area. True?

2) What should he bring that isn't provided in the rooms? Mini fridge, stereo? He still has all these things from his (short) college stint. If he doesn't take them, they're going away in our next yard sale.

3) Is internet (wired or wireless) available in barracks rooms? Free or or for a fee? Again, he has a computer, he just needs to plug it in.

4) How good is Verizon cellular service in the area?

5) How far is the chow hall from barracks? How far is the NIOC working areas? Will he need to take a bus, bicycle or get a scooter, or will he be okay on foot?

My brother-in-law Adam lives in the area, he's a retired Navy chief who was doing basically the same job Chris will be learning. Adam actually spent some time at NIOC, so he knows the ropes. Chris will be heading to DC a few days early to stay with his uncle, who will introduce him to the area and give him tips on living and working there.

Will arriving in the car of a retired Navy chief give him more brownie points than arriving in a taxi? LOL, just kidding.
