Just putting this out there because I've heard all the same stuff everyone here has heard, BUT I actually ran into a guy that works in the financial department that deals with people moving and he said to keep ALL receipts.  He said you won't end up needing all of them but just keep them all and let them decide what you need and what you don't.  He said it is a reimbursement, NOT a flat rate and you won't get certain monies if there aren't receipts for proof.  Like I said, still not sure what I think of what he said, but just thought I'd put it out there.

snmouse, my firend did a Dity without getting hte money upfront and she got reimbursed for everything

snmouse - they said its not a reimbursment. they dont give you what you spend. Its a flat rate decided by your weight and milage. they give you 95% of what the navy would pay professionals to move you.

My husband just got orders to Bethesda, MD! Anyone from there who can give us some advice on where to live? We were thinking Gaithersburg but I'm not sure if that's too far from the hospital? Also trying to figure out how the move will actually work. Can't do anything until we have a hard copy of his orders and of course that's not coming until 3 weeks before he reports sooo... has anyone else schedule movers that close to the move date? I imagine it's pretty standard in the military but I have no idea! I'm terrified we won't be able to get movers or temporary housing or anything lol!

lol thats basically what i said, Except the taxs are deductable from your expenses. We handed in all our paperwork reciepts and all and they said it was right. we'll have to wait for however long it takes for the navy to reinburse us to see if we got that money tax free which we should according to the advisor =]

I double checked at the office today when we signed our final papers. The dont reimburse, moving is a flat rate based on mileage and weight. The reason you turn certain types of receipts is because its takes off from the amount they tax you on the money given to u to move. =)

From what i understand you get paid for the weight in the truck which is why you turn in the weigh tickets. From the amount you get paid you deduct off all your gas and tolls and all other expenses, so you get that money tax free but all other money that is left you get taxed on..like the income tax.
