OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Comment by Anti M on October 1, 2011 at 3:28pm: You do get a set amount for meals and lodging, and for gas (by mile). He can get an advance if he knows to submit a timely request. If you are near a base, you can go to a class on moving.

You want to start talking to the Personal Property Office/PSD at your sailor's base ASAP. Or have him begin the process. A DITY doesn't simply mean you save receipts and get reimbursed, there is paperwork and procedures to set up ahead of time. Googling, I found a number of commercial sites which assist with DITY moves, even explaining tax breaks and so on.

If the Navy moves you, they will briefly store your goods. I seem to recall three months for temp storage, but don't quote me.

If your goods are packed, and you are moved by professionals, you won't have to have everything repacked, but they will likely open the boxes to be sure what is in there is what is on the inventory (and in what condition), and that all the boxes are moving grade, and that there are no prohibited items. Do NOT prepack if you can avoid it.

Just trying to figure it all out....my sister just went through all this with the air force last year and they ended up with about double what their expenses were. Just trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle and risk of moving it all myself. Also, if the navy moves you and your housing isn't ready do they store it somewhere?

Comment by Kac46047 on October 1, 2011 at 2:03pm: yes i think we got about 2000 but and i think another 1000 appeared to but we didnt touch it and still havnt cause even his cheif didnt know where that came from lol. we were able to cover most of the move with it. we rented a truck and trailer to tow my husbands car and i drove my own down. Gas was a killer for the truck.

I tell you if i didnt have my husband with me there was no way i could do that move by myself. Id have to recruit my dad and the rest of the family lol. We didnt even have living room furniture or kitchen table but i dunno how id handle unloading beds and frames, washer and dryers, dressers etc by myself!

To be honest i wouldnt do a dity move again unless we had to , we had to this time because my husband had things we needed at his house which is four ours away from were my house was with all my things.

I hear you about the parents, i moved back in with him while he went to more training after A school. I couldnt wait to leave!! Good luck on the move

Once it's in the house, I'll be fine. I've been living with my parents for TWO years I am one anxious chicky when it comes to setting up our home again!!!! I bet I won't sleep the first two nights and will be running on pure adrenaline! It's almost a shame our stuff is already packed up, I'm dying to pack something!!! Kac46047- did you get any money upfront for your move...the dislocation allowance?

Comment by annamichael on October 1, 2011 at 12:50pm: Hey everyone! I have a question about C school.. Michael is in the ITOF program - 6 year contract. He just graduated A school, and will start C school at the end of October. He was told he would definitely be shore duty. The other day, he was talking to people who graduated C school this past week, and he was told everyone that graduates C school, gets sea duty - assigned to a ship, not a port. We were really bummed about this. He went to his chiefs and asked how he could for sure get shore duty and they said there's no guarantee. My question is - do any of you have sailors in C school? What has been their experience after graduating? For those of you that have sailors that have sea duty (whether having had graduated from C school or not), what is your experience? Do they go to work everyday on a ship and then live with you off base or does it have to be on base houses? How often are they deployed? Once a year? And for how long? Thank you!

It was a pain but we did it lol. the only thing that really stinks about it is the fact we had to pack up and unpack by ourselves as the neighbors all watched and no one saidd hi lol. We jsut submitted our move packet so im betting we wont get reimburst for some time. We are thinking we will be making a couple hundred more then we spent on the move but we shall see about that lol

I have two kids, of course not sure hubby will be able to help. BUT all our stuff is already packed and in storage, so I don't really have much packing to do. And if I use a moving company does that mean they will have to unpack everything that's in storage and pack it again so it will then be insured? How much do you come out ahead if you move yourself?

I was just wondering if anyone else has shipped a car, and what company they went with and if they would/ wouldn't recommend. Just trying to get some input we are waiting for housing and he has to live on his ship until then and I am still in NC until December so a piece of home, and a way to get off base on his own terms, would be amazing for him.
