They must be able to inspect the contents of each box, or they can refuse to take it. Just in case you're smuggling booze and firearms kinda thing.  So each box must be opened.  The moving company will mark it as PBO (packed by owner) and it will not be insured for damage or loss.  You may be comfortable with that, but I wouldn't be.  A different sort of OCD, I was raised Navy and most of the moves of my life were done by professional packers who did a terrific job.  Yes, they create a detailed packing list for you to sign at pickup and on delivery.

Thank you Anti M!! :) No matter how much the Navy fights me I will still try to plan every single detail of my life that I can lol!! :) Also I have all of my stuff in storage back home... its not much but will they unpack everything.. or keep it in my boxes... I am a little OCD and all my boxes are numbered and I have an inventory with what is in each box.. I am sure its not the way they would do it but its the way I do it lol. :) JW Thanks for any help!

Welcome all new members! I've been at home getting married! I hope you all have been able to find answers to your questions and moral support to your upcoming move!

We waited around four weeks for the delivery appointment.  They will hold it up to a certain point if you are not ready for it.  Ask the PPO at point of delivery.  I know it used to be up to three months, but things change so much, I'd hate you to rely on that if it were no longer true.

I have a question I have heard that there is often a wait when you get to where you are going to actually get your stuff, bc the Navy moves on there own time of course lol :) but anyways. My hubby will be deployed when I am getting the move all taken care of, I am in WA with none of my stuff pretty much when he leaves I will drive home to OK to see my family, and get my wisdom teeth taken out and few other things. My main question is what kind of time frame should I shoot for? I would love my stuff to be in Virginia when I get there but I dont know how long they would hold it for me if I moved it way too early. So I am trying to decide possibly how far in advance before I move should I get my stuff sent?

@ Emily, the website can be confusing at my husband A school they werent too helpful but I have heard most offices will help you get it set up and going on your first move on the site like walk you through it. If not I might be able to help a little with specific questions We set up a move on the site (which later got cancelled...sort of frustrating to finally figure it out then have it for nothing...) but this time I am going into the PPO office to get everything figured out!

Emily, I wish I knew more about the online half, I dealt with PPO directly.  Will anyone at the office talk to you?

The travel office will issue tickets which include routing to where you are going to take leave, you just pay them the difference.  He needs to arrange that, you wouldn't be buying tickets home then getting Navy tickets to Hawaii after.  It will be from Point A where he is, to point B where you take leave, to point C, Hawaii.

Kac, try to have everything in one room if possible, and they should be fine.  Just make sure NOTHING in that room can't go, like your purse.  Lock that stuff up in your car.

Still new to the moving thing, so I do have a quick question. We are moving to San Diego soon. (With any luck in 2 months) and the housing waiting list was 0-4 months for us. My question is about temporary housing. How will that work? Will we be able to move into temporary while we wait for a home to open for us?? Also, is usually a waiting list for the movers, and how should I go about that. What is the easiest plan? Any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks!

thanks Anti, ill just have to convinve my Father to let me store these things in our house which we have to room for lol. This should be a good conversation

Now will it matter that not everthing in the house is moving with us. Do i just direct them to whats going and staying. More or less everything is in one room now

LOL, Smoke, when dad died last year, I found things in his house that still had Navy moving stickers from 50 years ago.
