I've traveled cross-country with cats. One was great on the harness, one did alright, and one, well, we left him in the carrier and had a litter box in the back he would use when he thought we weren't looking. This is part of the long saga I'm supposed to post up in the pets discussion. LONG story.

Preview: we stopped in Vegas and stayed at a Best Western which allowed pets. The cats cuddled up to the room alright, we were very careful opening and closing the door. In the morning, Jake was missing. HOW? Where? The maid came in and we tore the place apart . We could hear him meowing. We opened the small drawer in the nightstand and he popped out! He'd crawled up behind the drawer and curled up in it! Funny boy! I miss him so much, he was the Best Cat Ever.

Ha! Especially as my folks have owned rental units all my life, and we'd been model tenants.
Smoke, in re the cat thing - makes me think of the scene in "The Hangover" when the tiger wakes up in the backseat of that vintage Mercedes and goes after Bradley Cooper. Why not use one large dog carrier instead? & btw I hate to think what the process is of "making them afraid of the outdoors" - photos of bears? ;)

The housing is run by contractors now, they aren't half as mean as they used to be. So I hear. I remember cleaning when we moved when I was a kid. There's a reason as a Navy spouse I chose to NEVER live in base housing. That, and we had too many pets for what we were offered both in Japan and San Diego.

We did leave our condo in San Diego a relative mess, the company who bought the units were total jerks. It was worth $750 not to break our backs when we weren't going to get it back anyway. They had bought the family owned condos and were in the process of tossing out anyone who didn't pass the new credit checks or had pets, and they were keeping deposits. Lots of military and low income single moms were losing their homes they'd lived in for over ten years, and no sign of empathy. So we didn't lift a finger. This wasn't military housing, this was a huge management corporation. I wasn't concerned with who was coming in behind me.

Yeah, the pregnancy thing doesn't work anymore.

Ruthella, now they'd probably hand you a $5 test kit and give you two minutes to hand back the results! We once moved out of a rental that we had so spotless and shiny, my husband had used CAR wax on the kitchen counters. The mgmt gal came in to inspect, put her toe on a microscopic piece of lint on the carpet and demanded "What's this??" My mom was there helping and I thought I'd have to hold her back. Ooh, moving isn't easy....

Welcome Janie and Jessica! I'm sure the suspense is nerve wracking but it's an exciting time, too, how are you coping?
Whitney, re the food thing on moving day, I'm thinking a bucket of chicken sounds like a good idea. You can also chop up a head or two of romaine, add a few tbsp of Marie's caesar dressing and some croutons and have an easy-to-make, big bowl of caesar salad to go with. Paper plates, plastic cups and a big trash bag of course ;) btw, the Goodwill always seems to have punchbowls for a dollar or two, they make great salad bowls!

Thanks for the welcome :) I also moved to be closer to my husband during a-school and we should be getting duty station orders within the next month or so.
