Excited mom here, heading to Pearl Harbor to see our son in FOUR weeks!!

A great group to try out..... Lots of knowledge, big broad shoulders and hugs.

"Safe Harbor" A place to set down the sails and relax with  each other. Whatever  brings you  here.. be it anxiety about your sailor, questions and fears... or just to visit.. You can be sure to find  it here...Safe  harbor where we chat , kick back, and  offer support to  each other.  A place to celebrate  life.. the  good times and the  low times.

Lion55's, I am from the Pittsburgh area here in Pa. Yes we have plans this summer to see him in Hawaii but I got  and email from him the other day and it said he had bad news, good news and really bad news. Now I have no idea what that all means. He also said instead of getting out of the Navy next year he could possibly get out this August. He has been in 4 1/2 yrs now and by then it will be 5 yrs. I really wish he would stay in  but it is not my  life and can't tell him what to do. He will be home in about 4 weeks and I can't wait. I don't like deployment but it hasn't been too bad. This is my first and his too, so it was an adjustment for the both of us. I wish your son all the luck to you and your son.

Welcome Lion55's mom! Words of wisdom from me are...get ready for your sailor to be extremely busy once he gets to his boat. The first year is all about getting his qualifications or his "dolphins"or "fish".  That is the pin Sailors receive when they become a full fledged Submariner.  Until that time, they are often called Nubs (non useful body- according to my sailor) because they cannot stand watch alone or complete jobs alone.  They must "qualify" on each watch with a "qualified" sailor and learn the job to earn the pin.

There will be many stressful weeks and maybe even months until qualifications are obtained. The sailors are pushed to qualify quickly so they can join the rest of the crew carrying their own weight.

Your job is to stay positive and encouraging, focusing on the end product (dolphins) through out this time.  No matter how discouraged your sailor may seem, it is part of the learning process and helps them become better sailors and also helps them to bond with their crew.  Sort of like when in high school and they don't score well on a test or had a bad game.  YOU are their BIGGEST cheerleader.  It is hard as a mom to hear some of the things they are going through, but it is definitely worth the struggle in the end.

There is another group called Sub Moms that is more active and will have information and support for you also.  Another good group to join is Safe Harbor.  This group is for support and comfort when you need.  I am a member of both of those groups and know you would be welcome.

The next years will be both exciting and hard for you in different ways.  We are here to help you through it.

Mmy son will be assigned to USS Texas SSN 575. It is a sub. Pretty cool boat from the google I did on it.  Have you made any travel plans yet?  Where do you live? Where will you be traveling from?

Lion55's mom, welcome to the site. I am going to Hawaii this summer too to see my sailor as well. What ship will he be on when he gets there? Mine is on the Port Royal and they are on their way back from deployment. Don't think I have words of wisdom for ya, LOL but I am sure he will like HI and you will to when you visit. I know I am anxious about going too.

My son is in Groton right now but will be in Pearl Harbor this spring.  Just trying to make some contacts and maybe get some info about traveling to Hawaii this summer or fall depending on when he will be there and not at sea.  Anyone have any words of wisdom?
