Hi

My son has been there for about two years now

he says for the new sailors to go the MWR office or area at the NEX and they have all kinds of classes for example how to buy a car, and how to do your money and your taxes etc.

and to buy a map to get around the island.

the bus system is pretty good  alot of people get on the bus  at China town area.

Hello- My son just got commissioned as an Ensign and is assigned to Pearl Harbor.  He just left last week and I have so many questions that he doesn't have the answers to.  He has gone to the ship 2 or 3 times, but never for a whole day.  How long does it take for new officers to get all the administrative stuff taken care of?  He has been spending most of his time moving into a new place and finding a car.  He said the base is pretty intimidating as he is feeling is way around by himself.  Do you have any advice about getting acclimated to life in Pearl Harbor?  I don't want to bug him but I want him to know the best way to get things done instead of fumbling around by himself...  Am I being too protective?

I know how you feel MJ. It is my sons first time too. He said he will probably only be able to email me. I hope not, I hope we can skype once in awhile too. What does your son do? Mine is a CTR5, cryptology. I am happy I found this site with some moms with kids on the Port Royal as well. I know I don't know know what to expect either.

Hello, My son is in the Port Royal ship right now.  It's his first deploy.  I'm happy and excited for him but also worried not sure what to expect.

Wonder if/when I will hear from him???

Hello everyone, I just joined this group. I was looking for a Port Royal group and came upon this one. My son is on the Port Royal right now. He has only been in Hawaii for 1yr now.. Well almost, it will be a yr this August.

About the uniform thing my son said they are not for security reasons not to wear their uniforms either. I also have a son in the Airforce in Japan and soon going to Iraq for 6 months.

Hi,  I wonder about the uniform on the plane.  My sailor doesn't wear his when flying either.  I know that when the military assigns an honor guard to escort a fallen service member, the honor guard usually wear their uniform.  I don't know about others.  I belong to Soldiers' Angels & we have met service members at the airport, meet & greet.  They have never been in uniform that I remember.  Would be interesting to know why they usually don't.   I don't remember my sailor ever saying anything about not supposed to wear uniform when flying.  I thought it was just for his comfort. Blessings,

We are planning a trip to Hawaii to see our son, can anyone suggest any good hotels?

Yankee's mom, my son was told the same thing when he was fresh out of Sub School.  But the last 2 times he came home he did wear his uniform and was upgraded to first class on 2 the flights.  I don't know what changed to make him do so.

I did meet a family at the airport last time he came home that said her husband cannot fly in uniform because of what he does.  I assume he does classified work or something like that.  Maybe he is a Ranger or Seal, something like that.

Welcome flowermom!  My son has been at Pearl Harbor for over 3 years now.  He is a NAV/ET on the Olympia.

well maybe it is just Hi

but we were flying from hi to DFW last week  and they said all Military personal in uniform maybe get n the plane

and we had one airman who was a Navy airman  in a white uniform and got on the plane before the rest of us.

I guess it depends on the airports.
