navymom 120 i just texted her and asked her
Snickerdoodlemom my son has suspended his phone on both deployments. He does it so he doesn't have to pay for it since he can't use it. Besides international rates are huge. My suggestion is to have it suspended. When you call make sure you mention military suspension. There is no penalty or charge.
Navymom120 and Snickerdoodlemom I am so glad they both got in touch with you. My son didn't call (darn him) however he did email me. Navy mom my son is a MM3 so he is not in the same area of the ship as yours I am sure. He works on the boilers in the hull of the ship. Not a pretty job. However he likes the control of being the power of the ship :-). To you both I would not worry about the box number. There is enough information that it will get to them. When sending things don't forget to insert a picture or two of you and your family doing normal stuff. They will appreciate it. Avoid chocolate. It melts. My son loved when I sent Easy Mac. You would have thought it was a major treat!. One of the fun things I did was sent him a singing birthday card. The guys around him harassed him so much that he asked me not to send him singing cards. I thought it was funny. I don't know if you son's brought their personal computers. If so make sure you set up a SKYPE account. I was able to have a conversation two times during his last deployment (while at port). One other tip I normally do not answer the telephone if it is a number I don't recognize. While he is on deployment I do. His phone is shut off so often he would use someone else phone.
Does anyone else know if they suspended their phone service on the cell phones? My son asked me to wait a couple days...he will try and email and let me know what he finds out.....it isn't going to work in the next stops anyway.
Hi,
My son arrived in Hawaii and arrived to the ship yesterday. I spoke to him a few times plus got a few texts.
He did send an address.
Looks like this:
His Name
USS Peleliu
Squadron Name/number
FPOAP and then what appears to be a zip code
There is no box number?

Welcome navymom120. I am glad you have joined us. A lot of us have been missing our loved ones for a week now. The emotions flow for a while however please stay positive, an know that they are defending our rights :-)
I just put a package in the mail today to my son. I know it takes 2-3 weeks to get to him. I know that last deployment he really enjoyed me sending him dvd's that were series of his favorite shows. In this package, I put in Halloween Treats so he can have something for his favorite holiday (yes for some odd reason, it is Halloween). The other thing I sent as a joke was a wind up turtle. My silly son so wanted to bring on a live turtle onto the ship so he could have a pet. He went to the pet store and they would not sell him a little turtle because they had to be at least 4" big so it wouldn't be a choking hazard! I laughed so hard. So.... in his package I included another box that said "live animal" although it is not a live turtle it is a windup one that will make him smile. That's my goal is to make him smile if I can. Hope everyone is doing well! Remember if you haven't heard from your sailor, then try the facebook messaging method. This way you can at least connect and he/she can send you their email.
Hang in there Snickerdoodlemom. I feel your sorrow. Does he have your email address? Hopefully so this way he will email you from the ship. If he has a facebook account you can message him this way also. I know my son used facebook uses his facebook account however it is not a frequent as my personal email.
I know it is scary in many ways however they will be okay. Positive thoughts. This is the beginning of his journey. You are going to be surprised how much he changes in such a short time. My son I always referred to him as the class clown. Not any more! He is Mr. Responsible. The Navy did this to him. It is re-assuring to know that he can take care of himself now. I finally had to cut the strings.
agh....been crying all weekend. My son leaves this morning from San Diego Airport to meet the ship. Skyped with him last night, the notice was so sort we couldn't have arranged for me to be there when he leaves. He just called to say they are on the way to the airport, I started crying....I tried so hard not to.
I am thinking we will be suspending his phone service, Verizon in San Diego said that is what most of the Sailors do. He has two full calling cards on him.
I don't have his address or email address yet for the ship.
