Pictures say 1000 words--

Two welcome homes at the local airport; A special Honor Flight welcome home; Escorting a young man home from the airport with motorcycles and "cages" (cars). You don't need a motorcycle, just a sense of patriotism and respect for those who serve our country.

You vent all you want! How strange that no one said anything though. My son told me he doesn't go to Wal-Mart in Zion in uniform anymore because he gets stopped constantly and thanked. Zion is close enough to Great Lakes that they must see uniforms all the time, I'd think.

The newspaper took many pictures of yesterday's mission.

Yesterday was the hardest mission I've ever been on. We welcomed home a National Guard soldier for the last time. I have to write about it--I would guess there were at least 100 motorcycles that showed up at the McDonald's near the airport. In addition, there were people like me, in cars and trucks, probably another 40-50. The news has estimated 400 people were at the airport when the plane came in. As we were gathering at McD's, three stretch limos pulled up with family. That's when it hit me--I could be that mom. This young man was killed by an IED; my son hit an IED last May. He was injured slightly, and I thank God everyday, but yesterday it hit me probably for the first time. I loaded pictures into an album that will be on my page eventually. The front page of our paper had a beautiful picture of the color guard carrying the casket to the hearse from the plane. The media even commented that there was not one protester in sight anywhere along the route, at the park in his hometown, or the funeral home. There were lots of vehicles stopped with people standing at the side of the road with flags though. Very respectful and moving.

Wendy, Everyone must be busy. I can't even remember what you said!

There's a mission today--a sad welcome home. A soldier KIA is arriving at the Moline airport at noon and being escorted to Kewanee for the funeral Saturday. I'm going to guess the media will be there. I wasn't going to go, but I've changed my mind--I think I will go at least for the arrival part. I'll report back later.

Karen, on the other hand, I want to respect the family by not invading their privacy. I can see some groups using those pictures for propaganda against our military, too. I would hope that a family would have a choice. I'm not against allowing pictures, but I can see the other side depending on the motive.

Hi Ruth and everyone, Thanks for the invite. I also do not ride (but one day I will have a Harley). So a "cage" it is...lol I will gladly do all I can. These are all our Sailors and Solders. Rehne'
