Eight weeks ago we kissed goodbye

And sent you on your way

Now the day has come we’ve waited for

It’s Graduation Day!

No more sitting, staring at the phone,

Just praying it would ring.

No more waiting on the mailman

And the letters he would bring.

Your days of standing watch have passed,

And thoughts of missing home.

You have grown to take your place at last

And stand up on your own.

You wondered if you’d make it through

To stand here on this day

For all the things you’ve learned to do

With pride you now can say…

“A Navy Sailor stands before you,

Here on graduation Day!

I have done what I se out to do,

In every single way.”

Congrats to parents and spouses of new sailors!  So exciting!  On the gift basket raffle for Meet N Greet - is anyone doing a basket for Div 59/60?  I will bring some Oregon items along!

Excited for 053-056 for your calls today!  Best phone call ever!  Getting ready to leave for GL shortly (had to shovel the driveway out before we could leave!).  Wanted to give ourselves a bonus day in case of bad roads since we're driving.

Good Morning!  Calls expected from 053-056 today, the newest sailors!  Safe travel for those leaving for PIR today.  Hope that the weather is cooperative and there are no travel delays.

Here are a few little PIR notes:

BLEACHERS:

Are cold! I brought a shawl to either sit on or wrap myself in.

Don't set anything down on the bench that is thin like a camera, cell phone, keys, etc. The floors of the bleachers are solid except underneath the seats there are openings just wide enough and about a foot (?) long for modern day devices to fall through...it is like a black hole...you won't get it back.

PHOTOS:

Take a few practice shots before the ceremony. They can come out dark. I think it's all the grey paint LOL.

You may start photography when you enter the Visitors enter (USS YORKTOWN) and in Midway Ceremonial Drill hall...only. Photography is not allowed anywhere else onboard RTC. You risk having your camera confiscated and the pictures deleted. Also, your Sailor could get in trouble. They are your sponsor while you are onboard RTC.

SMOKING is also not permitted onboard RTC.

There are concession stands at either end of the PIR hall that sell soft drinks COFFEE water and some snacks. You may bring some snacks into the Hall with you if needed for little ones and those that may need it for medical reason. They used to sell "Dixie cup" (Mens style)Sailor hats for the kiddies for $5. I hope they still do.

POSTERS, BALLOONS, FLOWERS and LUGGAGE

Are not permitted in the Drill hall. Posters obstruct others view. Plus, this is a Formal ceremony and they do not suit the event. You may keep these items in your car and present them to your Sailor following PIR but remember that they may not bring those items back onboard RTC when they return from Liberty.

WHEELCHAIRS

Use of wheelchairs and manually-powered mobility aids are authorized onboard RTC. Wheelchair accomadationsare provided on the Drill deck and a companion seat is made available for someone to sit with them. RTC does have wheel chairs on a first-come first-serve basis. Also, if you need handicapped parking be sure to show your placard to Security in the Gate Shack and they will direct you to handicapped parking.

Krista,

Thanks for the feedback on the Navy Gateway.  Also, still hoping to hear something about the Navy Lodge soon~~

Have another awesome PIR!!

Hi Catmom! I spoke with Mary at Gateway yesterday and asked her point blank about the question of Sailors not being allowed in the rooms or even allowed to enter Gateway with their family and whether she had heard anything about this issue from the RDC's and she said she had heard nothing about any of this. She said that she and her staff have no way of knowing who is a recent grad etc...and that they don't ever impose any such rules on their guests. We stayed there when my son graduated last spring and they told us about graduates standing just outside the glass doors waiting for an invitation to come in/on board...she always feels really bad when she sees this happen....anyways, that is the news from Gateway. We are looking forward to staying there again on Thursday. We look forward to clean rooms, convenience of being on base and the kind customer service and hospitality :)
