As far as the first call...they are NOT guaranteed to call. Most get 3 calls: the "I'm here" call, the "I'm still alive" call (3 weeks) and the "I'm a Sailor" call (after Battlestations)...some only get the last one, some get all, some get more....depends on the division, RDC and the rct.
Watch for the 847 area code and the id is usually payphone...occ it is withheld or restricted.
Sometimes they get a quick info call the first week or two...the id is US Government then.
They all need calling cards...it eats up 30 minutes to just make a call from a payphone....so they need a bunch of minutes. They can buy calling cards at the NEX. If you send them one ...make sure it is activated first (saves time)
When you get your first call DO YOUR BEST NOT TO CRY…your rct will be emotional and most likely will be tearful and if they’re not, they will be if you are and then you’ll waste valuable talking time crying.
Let them talk…they don’t get to talk much at boot camp, have questions and a pen and paper by the phone to jot down what they say. When they call and you hear their sweet voice…everything you wanted to ask will go out of your mind.
If they are upset..just reassure them, let them know that it will get better, it is only a few weeks and after boot camp it is MUCH better. Tell them you love them, yes you do miss them but are looking SO forward to seeing them march through those doors at PIR.
Then, hang up and come on here and cry and shout and be happy that you heard from your rct !!!
In the Navy, "no news is good news." They are allowed to contact you almost immediately if something goes wrong, and if they cannot, the Navy does. It was just over five weeks from the time my son left home and his first call, four weeks is typical.
Thank you so much for taking the time to give us all of this info. It's the not knowing that is the hardest. This website is amazing!! So much great info!!!! My son left on 1/17, we are still waiting for the form letter to confirm his PIR date. Can't wait to find out!!!
J's mom my son left on 1-17 too from tn maybe they are together.
My son left on 1/17, and I received the form letter today with his address and a short note on the back!!! Keep an eye on your mail Mom! :) I thought his PIR would be 3/9, but it's is going to be 3/16. I didn't expect that. So, hopefully they will open another PIR group for 3/16.
Thank you so much for all your helpful info.... i'm just a little disappointed to hear they will only get 3 calls ... if that. I was sooooo looking forward to hearing from her on sundays... and talking to her about anything and everything. Shes been gone for 3 weeks now and besides the "im here" phonecall... i havent heard from her since then. I miss her soooo much. Didnt think it was gonna be this difficult. I havent gotten a personal letter at all either... all i got was "the box" and the form letter with a quick note on the back.. it said she was ok but very lonely. So It broke my heart of course. I have written her every single day.... Sent her tons of pictures... 350 minute phonecard ... 2 books of stamps .... i just wanna hear from her soooo bad.
thanks for this info :)
This is very helpful! I want to hear from him so much. My son left on Jan. 10th, 2012, and we got our form letter last week with a very brief note from him. I check the mail everyday hoping for a letter, but nothing yet. It really helps to remember that "no news is good news."
FTLW - I am so proud of myself, I did really good with the phone call, THANKS to you!!! As you all know, I have been an emotional MESS the past few days. To top it off, I had only gotten 4 1/2 hours of sleep from Wednesday afternoon to Friday afternoon when the call came in, but I held it together! I saw the 847 area code, yelled to my daughter that he was calling and answered with a very chipper "Hello!" followed by a very chipper "How are ya doin?" I had my list of questions/subjects for my hitlist, and got through all of them. He on the other hand sounded like he was down, and it would not have taken much to break him, emotionally. My daughter did the same. It was a good call and a GREAT day!! He still really misses home, but has a "game plan for every scenario, EXCEPT FAILING OUT!" that is a quote from one of the letters, so I know he's okay, and he's determined to get through it! Thanks again for all of your support!! I wouldn't make it through this without it!
You did fantastic! You and your daughter! You made MY day with your news!
I know..."down" is normal though! Plus, he has a plan! I hope you told him that you have his screensaver on your site! Always like seeing it!
You are welcome! This post is originally by JessicaB...one of my most memorable by her as it got me throught hat first call! I just kep sying in my head, "Jessica said not to cry, Jessiaca said NOT to cry, Jessica said NOT TO CRY" and it worked...til I got off of the phone!
I failed, I cried. But they were tears of joy! Didnt see this info soon enough. I will do better next time. Going to get some party horns and keep them near by so we can have a phone celebration on the hopefully next phone call. :)
