For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on February 8, 2015 at 12:26am: lamareo4 - They do issue a phone card to the Recruits in their Ditty Bag. I believe that it is only good for one use though. Sometimes the dang thing doesn't work!

That may have been what he was talking about when he said "the card".

While your Recruits get the NEX card to purchase necessities and can purchase phone cards when they go to the NEX, it is unknown when that will happen. Trips to the NEX are scheduled for the whole Division and they are instructed which aisles they may and may not shop in. So I always advise for folks to send one if their Recruit went to BC without one.

Many, many times we see Recruits sharing their phone cards with other recruits that do not have one.

The Recruits are discouraged from having cash at BC. When they ship out to BC they are instructed by the Recruiter to only have enough for a meal if needed (usually they get a voucher at the AP when they arrive...if there is time).

All of their basic needs are met in BC and they also are provided with a NEX card that allows them to buy further necessities during BC. This card has about $200.00 on it and comes out of the Recruits future pay.
