Hey everyone, I want to give you an "ADVANCED WARNING" to be prepared to receive calls from your SRs this weekend! The call will show up as "847", "Waukegan, IL", "Pay Phone", or "Government" or anything else that may be unfamiliar. If it is a sales call, just politely tell them "No, thank you." Please also let your family members know about this too~~
During this time in Boot Camp, please keep your cell phones charged, ready, and with you all the time---upstairs, downstairs, out in the backyard, in the bathroom, out to get the mail, of course, out on errands. If you are going to a loud restaurant or a movie theater, remember to put it on "vibrate" and put in your pocket or some place you can feel it. They can call during the week or weekend, so just be prepared: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm (Pacific/West Coast); 7:00 am - 7:00 pm (Mountain time); 8:00 am - 8:00 pm (Central/Great Lakes time); 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (Eastern Coast).
Bustersmom,
I rented a car from Thursday to Saturday for $124.00 total. Sarge's prices for roundtrip from the airport to your hotel, then back to the airport at the end of your weekend is $99 from Chicago O' Hare, $157 from Midway, and $167 from Milwaukee. Includes a free ride to PIR, but have to pay to come back to your hotel from PIR at $3 per person. Sailor should ride free. Also, if your soon to be Sailor will be flying out of an airport to their A school, there is the cost of that ride and back to wherever to consider. Not to mention bringing him/her somewhere to eat or getting around the area. Using shuttle taxis will definitely add up~~
There is a metro train to go into Chicago near RTC, but really, doing that trip should be done by families with SRs attending A school in Great Lakes who will have the whole weekend together. It's really a very tight trip to make on PIR day for those flying out~~ The Sailors must not be late getting back to RTC!
poodlelover: Most economical is to rent a car. The shuttles from airports to GL are expensive, even Sarge's who is a friend to the Navy. His shuttle to PIR is reasonable....as is the local shuttle (both taxi) services with a PIR special rate. But you can find deals on car rental.
Thanks @diannep. My son is flying out for A school so hopefully will be fine staying at Navy Lodge. What are getting back and forth from airport and meet and greet. Any suggestions?
@Theresa711. My son arrived 1/26. I just got my letter today. I also just made reservations at Navy Lodge for 26th -29th.
Guessing my son will be in PIR 3/27/15 also. Have not gotten the letter but he arrived late 1/27.
@Poodlelover - I am not too far from ya..we are in Pcola. When did your SR arrive in GL?
Just a headsup for those with sailors staying in GL for A School and families staying at Navy Lodge for PIR. Lately, some of those sailors have been denied the chits needed from A School Command in order to visit families there. We don't know why and it doesn't happen all of the time....but just wanted you to be aware. The sailors really look forward to coming back to your rooms, to rest, take a long shower (without shipmates around them!).....etc. But Navy Lodge is a great place to stay (book in your SR's name if you don't have military ID yourself). Some have continued with their reservations at Navy Lodge with the plan to switch hotels on PIR day if necessary....others just won't take a chance. Just wanted you to be aware it could happen. With those flying out for A School, they shouldn't have a problem with families staying at Navy Lodge.
