While the recruits are at bootcamp they are often told dates of when they will finish A-school. This info is based on how long their actual A-school classes last. They don't take into account the indoc classes they are required to take when they get to their A-school base or the time it takes to class up. They have certain requirements they must meet before they can begin classes. And like Diannep said their classes may be on hold. They may only start a new group of classes every 2 weeks instead of weekly. In my Sailors case the new class started on Monday but it only had room for a certain number of Sailors and they went in ABC order down the list and filled the class. When they got to the W's the class was already full and she had to wait until the next one began a week later. I have seen some Sailors wait a month or more before starting. That is very hard on them because they have it in their heads when they leave bootcamp how long it will take and when they will get to come home and I have never seen it work out that perfectly. So please let them know that it will most likely take a little longer than they expect and they just need to make sure they reach all the requirements for classing or phasing up so that they stay on schedule as much as possible. Some of them will still need a lot of encouragement once they get to A-school. You can join the A-school group on this site for their rating and ask the members on that page how long it normally takes before the classes actually begin. Most of them will be very helpful.
Thank you Betsy and diannep for your quick responses. I really appreciate your help. I believe he will be training for ET or FC in Great Lakes and will be going to C school after A school. I don't know if this information helps in determining the length of A school but that is about all I have. You guys are great.
cheryl: To add to Betsy's info, you may want to join the N4Moms group for your SR's rate....they would be able to give you an idea, but remember....like Betsy said, they can be on "hold" when arriving before they start school and if any of it is self-paced, it could take some longer than others.
I will be back on here later today. My mother wants a shopping day out today, so I'm going to spend time with her.
Cheryl, the length of A school depends on a lot of things. Some sailors may have classes that they need to take before the actual A school starts and sometimes they are "on hold" for the A school to begin. It also would depend on what their rate is, as some A school classes may only last a month or so, but others can go as long as over a year. There is really no way of telling unless you know all of that.
Hello all, I guess I'm the creepy stalker type because this is my first post on this site. But I have been following the conversations and you all seem so helpful. So I have a question about A school in Great Lakes- does anyone know how long it lasts? I'm trying to plan for the possibility of leave after A school. Thanks for your help.
Well I just printed out our Parking Pass!!! 8 more days!!!!!
They are allowed to have small amounts of cash, Katze. So that probably would be ok.
Katze, yea 3 am we have a 13 hour drive and that not counting stoping to eat, but most likely we will eat when we get gas. We have driven to Calif. non stop in 24 hours so this is a mini drive for us. Going to do the Calf trip come september, our niece is getting married and my husband grandmother turn 85 and wants us there.
Oh i must confess (i'm a Stalker too) :-)
