N4M's Community Guidelines
and
OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Good Morning All !

One thing I haven't shared with this PIR group is this:  There is a good chance that some of the RDCs with your SRs, or friends of theirs which give them access to info, are on both this site and the "closed" FB groups (yes, there is a way into those).  We know this has happened in the past....fact.  Many mistakenly believe that there is more safety in the FB closed groups.  Hmmm......interesting....where last names are exposed and just about everything personal is there!  Soooo....not saying this to alarm or cause anyone to flee social media.  Just be careful what you post when sharing.  For instance, saying your SR did great on his/her PFA is wonderful to post....saying that your SR can't stand his/her RDC....a huge no no!  About 4 yrs ago, there was the wife of a SR who posted that her hubby hated RDC (name).  Called him a (not nice name!).  Posted that right here on this site.  Then another wife commented right after that post that she should go up to that RDC after PIR and "kick him in the ___."  YIKES!  Back then, the PIR groups were started by a member of it (now the N4Moms veterans start the groups).  I quickly contacted the group creator who was the only one who had the power to delete posts.  Thank goodness she deleted both posts quickly.  She was also a Navy wife.  She contacted each of these ladies privately to explain....neither one of them responded to her at all.  How sad....she did their SRs a huge favor....they have no clue what could have happened to those SRs if those posts had been discovered.

So, not sure you should post something here or on FB?  Err on the side of caution and don't.  Private message would be a little safer.  Social media used wisely is a wonderful asset, but used the wrong way....ooops!

brittanymc:  You can do that at any time.  Now, I have to say, in the past, some have reported that their SRs/sailors' cards would not work at Ricky Heaven.  Not sure that is always true, but a few ladies reported that.  Not sure why that would be....I will check this out with RTC and see if they know anything about that.  If I get more info, I will let you know!

Okay, thank you so much diannep! Also if we plan to send gift cards for Ricky Heaven, when should that be done?

Comment by diannep on March 23, 2015 at 9:30pm

brittanyrmc:  Probably send the last one the Sat. before PIR.

Comment by brittanyrmc on March 23, 2015 at 8:39pm

I've been sending letters everyday, and my recruit gets them about 4 days after I send them, so when would be the best time to stop sending them? I don't want to stop too early!

Good Morning!

For you all on FB, especially in the PIR FB groups....PLEASE BE CAREFUL.  Please listen to the news today about the huge breach that has allowed a terrorist group to get many names of our military personnel, their addresses, piks, etc.....oh my gosh.  The news specifically mentioned vulnerability on social media sites.  This is what we preach and preach on this site.....the administrators over on the PIR FB groups say that their groups are closed, you have to be admitted, etc.  That's great that they do that, but not failproof.  There is only so much these administrators can do to make sure you are who you say you are....they have no access, nor do any of us, to a list of SRs at Bootcamp.  PLEASE.....if you are on these groups, consider deleting piks of your SR on your FB page and other personal info re: your SR....be vigilante in deleting posts on there from others who are exposing personal info.  This is a matter of national security, but more importantly, a matter of protecting the lives of of military.  Talk to your sailor about this after PIR.  The Navy will be talking to them too, but it helps if you reinforce this.

Sorry to be on my soapbox here....but we here on N4Moms have been fighting this issue for a long time.  Social media is a wonderful way to be able to stay in touch with family members and friends for sure (I am on it myself but not in Navy groups).  But it can be devastating to our military and the security they need to operate under.  Just be cautious in exposing personal info on this site or on FB, twitter, etc.

We love our military guys/gals and want to keep them safe!
