~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

shannon,
After he pays for his uniforms and gets into A school, he will be able to save. He needs to be disciplined. I've heard of many Sailors that just blow their pay on video gaming, drinking, spending money on food (when the Navy is already taking out from their pay to eat at the chow hall). Alot of those young Sailors have not known regular pay and fail to plan for their future.
Oh, I see. He was in dual enrollment when he is in high school and college at the same time. It's too bad those classes didn't count to bring him to E-2. Seems it has to be college classes taken after high school graduation that elevates one. At least the advancement to E-2 and E-3 will be automatic, just the time passing by. For E-4 (Petty Officer Third Class) a test has to be passed and it's not easy.
Find out from your A school group or Corpsman group if any there are any special rapid promotion programs for those finishing #1 and #2 in their class. My Sailor daughter finished her IT training #2 in her class and earned E-4 after 5 months at her first duty station (didn't have to take the exam), but she had to add another year to her contract~~
Anyway, your SR sounds very driven and I'm sure he will ultimately do well in his Navy career. He is getting paid to get trained and doesn't have to scramble for financial aid and student loans or money from mom & dad. Plus he can use the Tuition Assistance program to take college classes while he is in the Navy. Lots of options are available!
Friends,
Just want to let you know that the Facebook page for U..S. Navy Recruit Training Command usually posts many pics of PIR. If you spot your Sailor in these pics, you can Download them to your own computer by clicking on the pic, then going down to Options to download OR you can right click and Save Picture As~~
Hello Everyone~~
"I in them and You in Me. May they be brought
to complete unity to let the world know that You
sent Me and have loved them even as You
have loved Me."
John 17:23
shannon,
After graduating Boot Camp, he should received his E-2/E-3 from his college credits already earned. He should have patches and all on his uniform that show he is higher than an E-1 now. All SRs are E-1s during Boot Camp.
I hope the Post 911 GI option was shown him because that one doesn't have the $100 monthly payment and I think is transferrable to a spouse/children for 15 years. If he already chose the Montgomery one, he pays the $100 monthly for 12 months only. Not sure if he has the option to switch to the only one.
Do a bit more research on the Corpsman transferability to the civilian sector. I know the Navy has certifications in different ratings that may or may not be accepted in the private sector. Nursing is a specific one that many enter thinking this is so.
While I understand your frustration, please stand by your Sailor and encourage him during this Navy journey. I feel that God put him on this path for a reason~~ Praying for him and you to trust that God is in control...
Sorry my post posted twice....right now, it won't let me delete one! UGH! Will keep trying.
Hmmm, shannon. Not sure that is accurate on the transferring the GI Bill to children....I have attached the info on transferring to children:
http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/post911_transfer.asp
Your sailor does have to sign up to take part in the GI Bill and starts paying $100/mo then. My son did that and is now finishing up his Bachelor's. (he is now out of the Navy) He will have some benefits leftover and has a son, but his son is just a baby and benefits for dependents have to be used in a certain timeframe---so he won't be able to use them. I believe his eligible benefits expire in 2027, and his son will only be 14 yrs old by that time.
Sadly, many times, we hear that recruiters give inaccurate info to the recruits. My son was fortunate in that he had an honest one who told him the truth. Not sure if the others intentionally don't tell the truth, or if it is just that they are misinformed....sometimes it seems that it is just about "numbers" with the recruiters. But there are some good ones out there....
As far as his Navy schooling transferring to regular college....that is actually true...but he may find that all of his Navy credits will not apply towards his degree---and right now, no, he will not come out with a degree that counts in the civilian world unless he actually takes college classes while active duty. What happened with my son....his course of study for his Bachelor's didn't accept all of his Navy educational credits. I will say that I have heard that the "powers that be" are trying to make it where someone in the military who is trained as a firefighter, for example, should be able to be discharged and have that training count in the civilian world without doing more civilian school. I actually heard Pres. Obama mention that one time.....that military training/schooling in a profession should count in the civilian world. How long that takes to implement, if it ever is, I'm not sure. Seems only fair though, right?
