OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Jess:  I sure didn't mean for people not to use the FB groups that Lala mentioned.  I wanted all to remember that they need to use the same wisdom on those groups as far as what they post as they do on here.  We have found in the past that some felt a little more loose-lipped on the FB groups before people like Lala got involved to help monitor them.

We just hope that people don't leave this site and just stay on FB---but rather would use both groups.  That sometimes happens in the PIR groups and they basically become stagnant.  They just need to be careful on both sites not to post too much personal info being passed along by their SRs.

I'm so sorry I haven't been here the last several days. My Sailors are home with my grand baby and I have been spending time with them when I'm not working :)

I know the issues with facebook come up often on this site and even on the FB RTC page. I am one of the admins on the Facebook PIR group pages and we are very careful who is in our groups. We do our best to make sure the members really have a recruit in boot camp. We turn people away all the time who should not be there. And the pages are not public so no one can see what is posted unless they are a member. We obey the OPSEC rules and do not allow the posting of files with recruits names and personal information. The problem is that there are tons of other groups that are on facebook and they do not all follow these same guidelines. So you have to be careful what groups you join and if they don't look like they go by OPSEC then leave the group. No matter where you are online, even your own personal facebook page you are supposed to obey OPSEC and PERSEC. So just be careful. The facebook groups I am in are wonderful and very much like this site except they are not open to the public. I recommend this site to our members all the time. Everyone is just trying to connect to others with kids in the same division and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be careful :) If you want to join a safe facebook group for your PIR let me know I will get you the link. If you are part of a facebook group already and want to know if it is safe send me a message with the link and I will check it out for you. There is no reason why this site and the "great" facebook PIR groups cannot work together to reach as many moms and families members as possible so that everyone can have support throughout this journey :) BTW my first name is Lora and I have ribbons as my profile pic on facebook as well :)

Not sure if you gals missed this because I posted it late at night...

Just putting this idea out there for your PIR group.  It is totally voluntary.  Some of our past PIR groups have gotten together and put together State themed gift baskets/boxes/bags or really, any great idea would work, to be raffled off at Sarge's Meet & Greet on the Thursday evening before PIR.  This is great fun and would help offset the costs of Sarge and his wife as they do these meet and greets every week to help our Navy families.  If someone would like to start a Basket Project for this group, please let Sarge know and start a discussion up in the Discussion Forum for the ladies here to pop into to express their interest in making up and donating a basket~~  Thanks!

RuthB13,

You are brave if you would wear a dress in 40* weather!!  But I have seen the young ladies wearing dresses, bare legs, no coat!!  (Obviously they were not on Navy for Moms!!)

We suggest nice jeans or slacks, nice sweaters layered with long sleeved shirts underneath if you don't normally have thermal underwear, a heavy coat, scarves, and gloves. For shoes I just had extra thick socks with my athletic shoes or leather shoes.  I am from Southern California and I was fine with that.  No sense in buying heavy winter stuff just for this weekend!!

Hello Friends!

     "But let all who take refuge in You be glad;

ok, so i know that this is probably going to sound shallow, but really i'm not. I just need retail therapy, but the heck is going on with the weather in chicago!!! and i think our widget at the top of the page is incorrect because according to U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Facebook page they are posting that will be having a two hour delay due to blowing snow. How am i supposed to dress…Its supposed to be spring! A spring dress and snow boots…lol   Does anyone know what april weather is like in chicago?

No one told me that housework would be impossible while my son was at bootcamp. I can stay away from the computer long enough to get anything done.

NavyG:  Be sure to book your Navy Lodge room in your SR's name unless you have your own military ID.
