~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

@Shannon - http://navyformoms.com/events/a-blue-candle-event-1?xg_source=activity Here is the blue candle Event. There was someone on here selling blue candles, but I can't seem to find that person. But any blue candle will do. I sure am missing my son... Sigh...

Susie, You are correct, and if those posting haven't taken the time to make their FB account private on everything, all of their information is out there. That is why we say be diligent in what you post here and on FB.

I am on a a "secret" FB group for my sons ship. There are only 15 of us in that group and we all know who each others sailors are, and some of our sailors are buddies. We still follow OPSEC, and if we know they are leaving port, when they are leaving port, or where they are going we still don't post it...ever.

@Shannon- From what I have read, you can light a blue candle when you are missing your SR, and also, light it during battle station week. I saw it on here and I can't seem to find it right now (surfing at work has to be kept to a minimum) But when i find the link, I will post it.

Not trying to stir the pot or anything, but when everyone posts from their FB pages to the RTC FB page for Trivia Tuesday answers, isn't that exposing the same kind of info, as far as last names and potential PIR dates? Yet RTC hasn't seemed to have a problem with that. For instance, for the winner today, I was able to easily figure out what division she was representing and can plainly see her last name. And the RTC FB page is public so anyone can go look at it, whereas posts someone might make on a private FB group page can't even be seen by their own FB friends, much less the public. Just wondering. Appreciate your insight on this!

And in other news... Who else is doing the 30 day countdown? I am so excited and I can't wait for PIR. Still need to get a blue candle, and have to order challenge coin. But I think other than that, I am ready. I hope my SR is ready too!

Thank you diannep & ellen0502.  Good advice.  I'm not going to join the FB group because my full name would be exposed and my son is listed as one of my friends, so he would be easily connected to me.  Also, it would easily alert outsiders that I will be gone to PIR on 4/11/2014, just based on the name of the FB group.  I prefer to be conservative on this.
