~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Good Morning!

Ivall:  The first few weeks of Bootcamp are tough for your SRs and tough for families too.  Being out of contact for the first time, no way to reach them except in an emergency by 3rd party....that is hard in this age of instant connection!  But it is good training for when they are in "black out" times of deployment and there is no contact.  That first call/letter will seem like Christmas morning to you!  Make a list of questions you have, but be sure and let your SR do the talking since they may only have a few minutes before their RDCs tell them to hang up (don't be stunned if their hangups are very abrupt...they know they must get off the phones immediately.  Sending a questionnaire to your SR is a great idea....there are samples of these in the "pages" section up above/to the right...or make up your own.  They have limited time to write so some really appreciate these!

So I have gotten through another day, on day 11 now. Will PIR ever come? Will that first phone call and letter ever come? It's tough on us, I can only imagine what they are going through.

Ivall3:  We live in CT.  I come home from work everyday and make a mad dash to the mail box. I can't wait to get a letter from my son!  I want details! I want to know what he's doing, if he's happy, has he made friends, etc. etc.   I too cant wait for his PIR...i'm hoping the time flies by. Can't wait for his call...I hope if we are not home, he is able to try our cells.  My goodness, i would HATE to miss the chance to talk to him.  So proud of him but miss him dearly.

There are lots of Chicago area codes.  Also, some who work at RTC may have cell phones that are from other states....and they may let a SR borrow it....so please answer all calls when you have someone at Bootcamp!  Don't rely just on that 847 area code popping up, although that is the usual one.

You are so right.  Mine called around noon today (we are in NC) and if I hadn't been expecting another call, I don't know if I would have  picked up because of the area code.  We lived in Chicago for 4 years, and this was not one of the ones I remembered.  I will from now on answer everything!

Ivall3,

My Sailor daughter's PIR was March 8, 2013, year ago--yep it is almost 1 year since she (and I) went through what all you mamas are going through now!   So glad I get to work with diannep, ellen0502, Lala, and lemonelephant helping on these groups!!

Well, usually the calls have happened the first weekend after a PIR group is put up by ellen0502, so I like to prepare the moms and families so they don't miss it or don't pick up.  Better to be ready than to be surprised or miss it entirely because you don't know what "847" is (or "Pay Phone" or "Government" or anything else).~~  Don't forget to let your family members know too because I forgot to tell my Sailor's sister and she wouldn't pick up, so she had to use another calling card to call her Daddy!  (He didn't recognize the area code, either, but he chose to pick up!) We also didn't expect a call so early in the day (it was 8:00 am in Great Lakes).

Calls can come in from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on the West Coast and 9:00 am  to 9:00 pm on the East Coast.  Those in the same time zone as Great Lakes will receive calls from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

My son called this afternoon---it was just to get information and very fast, but it was nice to hear his voice.  He sounded  in good spirits:)  He is 22, so probably one of thee "older ones"

My husband is Ship 14 Div 146 - I got his box on Wednesday and his form letter yesterday. No phone call yet but hopefully soon. My husband is one of the older recruits (32) so hopefully he's keeping an eye on all the young ones! ;-)
