OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Oh definitely, THANK YOU for the info on what to bring and more importantly what not to bring! We have soooo over packed :( , oh well. this will make flying much easier. Thanks again! It has been really great reading everyone's posts, I am not able to get on here on a regular basis. I have learned a lot! See ya'll!

Thank you for the information on what to bring.  I probably would have brought too much. I was not sure as to the phasing up part as i was a former Marine and we got to wear civvies right away after boot camp when not on duty at our schools.  I guess they figured we went through enough "stuff" that we could handle a little civvie wearing!  Anyways, I will bring a set of clothes and his cell phone.  A new laptop is in the works (birthday in May) as his last hand me down one died.  Do the new Sailors have more than a seabag to drag around?  Besides the Navy backpack?  It DOES seem as if the Navy really issues A LOT more uniforms, so maybe they don't all fit.  I am pretty stoked for next weekend.  I got two letters yesterday; well one real letter and one form letter he filled out. I have NEVER seen such careful printing from him either.  Go Navy!

That just made my eyes tear up.  I can't imagine wanting to be there so bad and having flights cancelled.  I am praying for them!  I also hope this doesn't happen next week, too.

So sad for all these families so much stress. I'm praying they all make it to PIR!

Ladies, please pray for the PIR group ahead of you  04/19.  They are having horrible travel issues into Chicago because of massive flooding/rain issues....flights cancelled, streets closed.  Sarge even had to cancel his MeetandGreet tonight because the staff where he has it cannot get into work.  Please PRAY!  Those families are desperately trying to get to their sailors!

To be on the safe side as to what to hand off to your sailor headed to A School.  I would give them their phones, laptops - if they can take them and send the rest to them. They are already carrying a bit of stuff with them in transit without much room for more.  The phones and laptops they usually can use right away but the other stuff they have to phase up to get it.  Same goes for those staying at GL, with my last son we were able to give my son his phone but he had to give it to his RDC until he could have it - he stayed at GL after PIR.

They will want certain stuff mailed tot hem when they can have it and each place is different as to what they can have and when.  Bring a set of comfy clothes to wear in the hotel for them but that is it.  No sense in hauling lots of things to PIR that you just have to haul back home with you. It used to be that they had lockers at GL that we could leave their stuff for them to pick up after they earned phase 2 liberty and could have their civilian clothes, they did away with those.

I can remember the confusion that Grad 'N Go used to cause, I am glad they no longer use it.

I am so hoping the weather and flooding is gone when we head out next week. Praying for safety for those headed there this week.

Good Morning All !

....clarifying previous post:  Bring these extras up for PIR weekend and let your sailor decide at the hotel what he/she would want to take to A School.

Comment by diannep on April 18, 2013 at 9:00am

Connie:  You can pass off some personal items when you meet up at the airport with your sailor when flying out to A School, like FTLW said.  It is best if what you bring, they can incorporate into existing luggage (they have lots!).  But if you have to bring an extra carryon for it, make sure it is solid black....and make sure the airlines will allow 2 carryons, not just one (their Navy-issued backpack).

I would take these extras to PIR and let your sailor decide what to take to A School.  You can always mail more later.  Your sailor will go through INDOC when arriving at A School base and will know more then.
