OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Connie,

I have some tips on the airport up in the "PERTINENT PIR TIPS" in the Discussion Forum.  Also, even if they have to wear uniforms during their first 2 weeks in A school, they can wear their own comfy underwear underneath, so be sure to bring several of those in a plastic bag to discreetly tuck into your Sailor's backpack.  Don't forget to bring a set of comfy clothes for your Sailor to wear in the hotel room only when he is with you on liberty!

I'm going to let another vet mom talk about meeting at the AP as I am a bit rusty from not being on for awhile. It wasn't my niche then either and I don't want to mess it up. LOL

The link I provided below has USO info for all three AP's and departure from RTC info as well as my personal experience. :-)

Connie -

G& G means "Grad and Go".

It is an outdated term now. (ochaos has Sailors already and the term was still around, it was just done away with within the past year or so.)

The reason it is not used anymore is that there was confusing as to just which Sailors it referred too! The ones Staying in GL or leaving for other Commands for their schools. So there is no actual "term" for the two different departures from RTC now.

It is possible to pass cell phones at the AP's. You'll need to meet your Sailors there.

They have Phases (called Phasing up) they have to go through to earn more privileges at school for clothing , liberty, etc. There are three and they differ for each command.

F'rinstance here is the Phase I liberty rule on civilian clothing for Great Lakes TSC:

             (c) Wearing of civilian clothing is not authorized.

             (e) Uniforms are required at all times except for sleeping.

Phase II:

(b) Wearing of appropriate civilian attire is authorized as per reference (b) and will be conservative in nature, meeting all Navy policy and practices in support of good order and discipline.

Usually, You may bring your Sailor a set of civvies to take with them to A school and they can stow it (they should be able to fit it into their backpack) until they Phase up. Some may be told...don't bring anything

What I would do is bring a set and be prepared to take it back home with you. They'll be asking for a box soon enough with their technology and clothing and any other goodies!!

Barracks...is the correct term :-)

Ochaos, what do you mean by if they are G & G? Also, is it possible to pass on cell phones at the airport on Saturday? A
In addition, I am wondering since they don't have any civvies with them, what do they wear when they are off duty at A school? Are they required to stay in uniform all day except for off duty time around barracks (or w/e they call it in Navy). Should I bring some to airport to pass on? Or should I plan on mailing a box to Pensacola?

Good tip, ochaos!  Congrats on the cheaper tickets!  You just never know when one of those "deals" will become available.  Glad you got one of them!

Glad you heard from your son!

Good Morning All!

One thing to be aware of as we get closer to PIR is that with what happened in Boston, security at the airports and the base are likely to be tighter.

Finally got to book my tickets last night and got them for $178 round trip from California, cheaper than 2 1/2 years ago when I flew out for my other son's PIR.

Got a surprise call from my son tonight, it was short but sweet , so glad to hear his voice.

This is from the Family Guide, Shannon:

Sailors transferring to “A” School Outside of Great Lakes:
If your new Sailor is attending “A” School outside of Great Lakes, generally they will depart RTC the day after graduation. Travel arrangements are made by RTC, therefore Sailors are required to travel on their government orders. If your Sailor is flying out of state they must travel to the airport using government transportation, you may not escort them to the airport; however, you may meet them at the airport.
Your Sailor will receive guidance from their Recruit Division Commander regarding their liberty period on the day of graduation. Your Sailor may be required to check out with their RDC prior to commencing liberty. Please ensure you return to RTC with adequate time for your Sailor to reach his barracks prior to expiration of liberty.
RTC does not have your Recruit’s liberty or travel schedule, so you will need to stay in contact with them. Only your Recruit and their supervisor know their specific liberty schedule
