~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

ellen - thank you for answering my question & for the giggle, I promise I won't post any questions about what to wear!
When it comes to FB posting, I guess I try to abide by what I try to teach my kids to keep them safe on social networks, never reveal anything too personal i.e. your whereabouts. Trying to approach being a military family with the same theory only on a much larger scale & with much more at stake.
The truth is subtle hints are given here and on facebook, people post pics or comments about lighting their candles and wanting to know what time calls will come in. They do that on these N4M groups as well. The same rule apply on both sites and I am a member of both. People make mistakes there just like they do here and those posts are removed as soon as we see them. Everyone knows BS happen the last week of boot camp. The point of not being able to post BS dates it to get everyone used to not posting ship movement dates. I have been searching on the facebook group specific dates and have not found any posted. Melissa I would love for you to send me a message on facebook and let me know where the posts are that you are referring to and I will delete them.
I do not believe that ANYONE would intentionally do something to put anyone in danger of anything :D
I made a comment this morning, which may or may not be what Melissa is refering to. At the time, I thought it was one that wouldn't give anyone not Navy an idea of what it was about. I did delete it a few minutes later, however.
Exactly, Tara.
What's sad is that someone had posted about OPSEC rules. Unfortunately they've chosen to ignore that. What truly scares me is if they can't keep quiet about BS how are they going to stay quiet about truly important issues that can affect our sailors safety.
Sigh.....I wish the ladies on the FB groups would not have a "false "sense of security that their groups are really "private." Never the case with social media. If any of you on here are also on those groups, please remind those ladies to practice OPSEC there too. As FTLW said, yes, the Navy can shut down FB pages and has done so in the past. They want you to practice this now while you have SRs in bootcamp. It is a matter of national safety....and safety to your sailors....if you don't practice this when you sailor is deployed. As great as social networks are, I know they can be a pain in the ____ to the military when used improperly.
So please be mindful of that!
Wonderfully put, FTLW! :-)
FTLW: I appreciate what you have said. I agree with you 100%. I noticed that people on FB were posting BS dates for certain divisions and leaving not so subtle hints. I am on their group and I posted a comment about OPSEC rules. It bothers me that our SRs loved ones cant keep their mouths shut. You would think that our SRs safety would be enough for us to keep our traps shut. We have all been going through this hard time with our SRs gone and we all desperately want to speak with and hear from our SRs. We are all really excited for them to make it to and through BS but we have to respect OPSEC and our SRs. If that means keeping quiet about a simple date then bring it on! That day will come and go and before you know it we will get to be with our SAILORS!!!
All i am saying is that i agree with you 100% FTLW!
Hello,
I hope Everyone is doing well. :-)
I'm afraid I have something a little harsh to say. Sorry in advance.
It has come to my attention that the FB Group for this date is having some "liberal" postings about BST-21 dates for the Divisions.
A quick note first. RTC FB does not allow the posting of BST-21 info and that right there is good enough for me. From their FAQ FB page:
WHEN WILL MY RECRUIT GO THROUGH BATTLE STATIONS?
Battle Stations-21 is the recruits' final test that can take place anywhere from eight to two days prior to graduation. We do not give out the specific date your recruit's division will be taking this test nor do we allow the dates to be posted. We do not post any specific training details and we urge everyone to practice Operational Security by not posting such information.
Now, I am in no way "linked" to FB. N4M's does not monitor FB and does not work with it hand in hand. Not connected. Period.
I do know that many of you are on here and there as well (and [possibly other social network sites) and I cannot "tell" you what to do on them. (I do know that usually a caution is posted on them as well...I don't FB btw)
So I am just going to stress the importance of OPSEC for your Recruits/Sailors, all Branches and our Nation.
Yes, BST-21 seems small and insignificant as far as all that goes. But it is a starting point, foundation, baby step etc, for your future as a military family.
The Navy has and can have FB pages (and anything else I am sure) closed down for lack of good OPSEC. They did it in May of 2011.(on a side note N4M's is sponsored by he Navy but we are self monitoring. We do have a site admin)
Instead of looking at it as a restriction, please try to look ahead and know that a small sacrifice like this is a good thing for the future and how you handle information that your Sailor gives you.
When my hubby went to Qatar in 2001 I and HE did not even know where he was going. I didn't find out until he got home. He was not allowed to give me arrival/departure dates either until he reached American soil and even then we did it in code.
When he went to Iraq in 2011 we did know when and where but the same thing as far as arrival and departure. I told NO ONE.
1. Not allowed too
1. (because it is just as important) Hubby asked me not too. That is respectful of his wishes and privacy.
2. I would not want to burden folks who are not military with it even if I could. They don't know too "keep their mouths shut" and I do. They could bring up stuff in conversations with others and not understand the consequences. It would be my fault and then Hubby's as he trusted me with it.
(Breaking of OPSEC by a servicememebr is very serious as you can imagine)
This is about OPSEC but also trust and respect for your Recruits/Sailors privacy.
TY.
