Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Make sure to read our Community Guidelines and this Navy Operations Security (OPSEC) checklist - loose lips sink ships!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by GsMom(13/169) on March 26, 2013 at 10:17pm: Booked our hotel room at The Navy Lodge YAY we still have a little while but I can't wait for PIR. Miss my SR since he was feeling bad when I talked to him on Saturday it has made me really down this week. So hope he is feeling better.

I'm counting on the adage that "no news is good news!" But I still can't wait to hear his voice and ask some questions...

I can tell you one change in my daughter I noticed almost as soon as we got her in the car. Since she had not ridden in a car for 8 weeks she was a little freaked out by it. She kept saying to slow down. We were doing less than 30 mph lol. She also grew up a lot and appreciated me more than she ever had before and that has not gone away :)

Comment by ellen0502 on March 26, 2013 at 6:55pm: They don't need a laptop for school, but some like to have one. If their A School is done online through the Navy website, (which a lot of them are to begin with), they are in a computer bank for school.

Most of them like them when they are at school, gaming, skype etc.

Comment by ellen0502 on March 26, 2013 at 4:30pm: I don't know if you would call it a "personality" change, but yes they are different than before. Not sure how to describe it for you, other than just "more" of the good stuff. :)

The first day of liberty after PIR, and out and about, they may seem a little paranoid or zombie like. Very aware of their surroundings, sure someone is watching them to make a mistake (and someone might be). Quiet, sleepy, wary etc. This passes very quickly for most!

They have been watched for at least eight weeks, told what to wear, where to go, when to eat, when to sleep etc. They have to get used to their new found freedom again. :)

Comment by diannep on March 26, 2013 at 4:26pm: Rachel: The changes you will see in your new sailor are ALL GOOD! They usually are more mature, grown up, mannerly, etc. Their personality will remain "in tack" but they will learn discipline re: it. Don't worry....it is a good thing! :-)
