OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

proud momma:  If your new sailor will be flying out for A School, you should have Friday after PIR with your sailor (until 8 or 9 pm usually).  They usually fly out on Saturday, but sometimes on Sundays.  Assuming Saturday, you can meet your sailor at the airport and visit until their plane leaves.

If your sailor will stay in GL for A School, you will have weekend daytime Liberty with your sailor.  Lots of good time!

Congrats on the form letters received today!

Please be sure to check out Southwest Airlines for your flights.  They fly into Chicago-Midway and Milwaukee.  Midway is an hour or so from GL....Milwaukee is about 45 minutes.  Milwaukee has cheaper car rental, no traffic, usually flights are cheaper than Chicago.  However, if your sailors are flying out for A School, they will be using the Chicago airports if you plan to visit with them there.  Just make sure if you book through Milwaukee that you book your return later Sat night or Sunday (this is only for those with sailors flying out) so you can visit with your sailors until they leave.

Southwest doesn't charge a change fee....and just in case your SR's PIR date changes for any reason, you don't want to be paying that fee.  Also, two bags can be checked for free.  It is worth checking into.  My son was setback when there, and I already had my reservations (but not on Southwest!).  Had to pay a change fee on 2 tickets.

Very excited. Received letter today. My son is ship 14 division 180. Ran to post office and mailed some letters.

mom717, Sending colored pictures is probably ok, but I would have them done on "regular" paper. Don't let the envelopes you send get fat (or thick), you don't want anything to draw attention to your SR.

Hello! Just received the form letter! I am wanting to turn cartwheels!

Hi everyone! I'm so excited . Just got my son's form letter today so now we can finally write him. Does anyone know if they are allowed to get letters that include pics that may be colored/made by young siblings or would this be something to avoid?

I am planning on staying through Sunday. If he has to leave us earlier, then we will plan to visit Six Flags since our 13 year old will be accompanying us. I checked this am flight costs and if I booked today LAX to O'Hare then it would be $238 each person/roundtrip. I wished I knew for sure his PIR Date.

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on March 21, 2013 at 2:26pm

navy_wife, they won't know until the week of PIR and maybe not until a couple days before. We suggest you stay the whole weekend if you can just in case you can have some extra time with him. Then you can meet him at the airport on Saturday and get that extra time and if he doesn't fly out until Sunday you get even more time with him and you will be very happy you are still there :)

Good afternoon all!  My son is Ship 12 Div 177.

I got my box and letter Monday 3/18. Booked the hotel Tuesday but as far as airfare I think we are going to drive. Anyone know how long we have to wait to see how long their liberty is?

Comment by russellwife on March 21, 2013 at 1:20pm

hey I need some suggestions. I want to book my flight as early as possible so I can get the best deal that I can. When will the sailors know when they will be leaving for A school? I want to spend as much time as possible with my husband, so I don't know when to book my returning flight. Suggestions? Comments?
