Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Here is additional info on ship staff copy/pasted from another post:

Hello. My son PIRd 6/27 and I'm retired Navy. There is always a ceremonial company/ship at boot camp, including when I went in 1973. They practice a lot for PIR...and they don't practice with the flags, just the "sticks." Sailors who do the rifles usually practice with dummy rifles, sometimes just carved wood to save on breakage while they practice.

Being part of Ship's Staff is being given a title promotion while in boot camp or in school along with some responsibility. You can equate that to being a management position. No more money though! The benefits are that they have greater freedom, may be excluded from standing duty/watches, go to chow early, more freedom to move around and it looks good on their record and they get experience leading others. For example, they may be a RPO, Recruit Petty Officer and given a rank, maybe PO2 (Petty Officer 2nd Class) and some kind of job that is part of what runs the ship while they are there. They can be the person who manages the mail, they can be the person who leads them, etc. They get to wear real rank devices on their collars while in their utilities or working uniform. However, there is no pay increase and it lasts only as long as the boot camp or school.

My Son Sent Letters To His Granny, His Memaw & Poppa, And To Both His Sisters, Plus His Father And I. They Were Short, But It Was So Nice For Him To Think Of Everyone! He Also Made E2,In The First Couple Weeks He Was There, But Forgot To Tell Us When We Spoke On The Phone! He Also Had His Wisdom Teeth Out A Few Weeks Ago, Just The Bottom They Left The Top, He Says His Jaw Looks LikeSomeone Colored It With A Yellow Highlighter. He Still Is Enjoying Boot Camp....Loves The Salad Bar....Its Always Been His Favorite Thing To Eat! I.m So Happy And Proud For Him!

Vicky, It is a good thing. Perhaps maybe Yeoman?

Here is a link to the jobs the recruits can hold while in BC.

Question of the day...

I just received a letter from my son and he said his RDC selected him for "Ship Staff"

First, What is this and second, is this a good thing?  He said he was happy about it... but I haven't heard of this before. Thanks!
