I decided to change this folder, since I didn't mean for what I had written to become a new folder for discussion!  I thought I was just posting a new message.

Anyway, I'm just wondering....  is A School more like dorm life, boot camp life, or a combination of both?

Specifically:

  • What are compartments like?
  • What is schedule like?
  • What are communications like?
  • etc....

Is your daughter still here? I hadn't checked this page in forever! Yes, it's very hot here, but it is fairly arid most of the time. I hope she's doing well!

Thanks, my son is going (as far as we know) to Meridian, MI for PS school/training.  Do you think the compartments are similar there to the ones you describe here?  Called Ships, and all?  Thanks again!  I know they will enjoy those "private" baths and Microwave/Fridges.... :)

Hey Larisa my son PIR was June 1and he is now in Meridian as well. He is enjoying himself right now and has only been there a week I wonder if they no each other. He also like the idea that there is 12 SR from his div in bc at a and one of his roomates is from his div.

I'll bet they are buddies!   Is either of yours from Div 168?  That is Ethan's. :)

My son is in Pensacola and had 1 roommate and didn't complain about the room at all.  Think he was glad to have a little privacy.  I would say it is more like dorm life.  They can eat what is provided or there are places to eat on base if they miss chow time. LOTS of free time the first few weeks.  I was shocked how much my sailor was able to call and it seemed a lot of them didn't know what to do with their free time.  Lots of money spending ...and issues with that big time! I would say I heard from my sailor at least 2-3 times a week. Once they could leave base for the whole day the calls were shorter and he would rather text. On weekends if I texted him to give his siblings a call when he had a chance he usually called within a half hour. Seems to be more like a 8-5 job, the PT in the mornings 3 times a week. My son had a test after every week of schooling and those that didn't pass had another chance to take the test, if they failed it twice they had to repeat the week of schooling. That was his experience though. He was there about 2 weeks before classes started and there are some general classes everyone takes, that was about 3 weeks.  Then his classes for his rate were 2 weeks.  He graduates next week and was about to tell me today that he had orders for c school in VA and has to report to Japan in August.  He will take leave after A school and before C school - at least that is what he is saying as of today.  He has been really good at not telling me things until they are final and definate, so we wills see.

Wow, thanks TraceJ for that reply.  Very informative. I hope your son continues to do well.  Japan!  Is he excited?  I know my son would be stoked about getting to go somewhere like that, or be put on a ship.
