I have chatted with a few of you with children going on to Goose Creek for NUKE school. I figured that since we will be following each other around for awhile we could get to know each other here first.

MM?

It's his specific Nuke Rate. MM stands for Machinist Mate. There are also EM (Electricians Mate) and ET (Electrical Technician). My husband was really hoping for MM since he read online that they have the highest job satisfaction and the few that he talked to about it really liked being MM's. So I'm very happy for him! MM's A-school is also 3 months shorter than EM's or ET's.

Thanks for the clarification, all this Navy lingo is definitely a course in itself! LOL.  My son will be going to Goose Creek also after PIR on 6/1. Have only received one letter from him so far, dying to know more, as he was struggling on some of the PT qualifications about a week a week ago.

There is a Nuke Mom group on here that has a ton of information and everyone is very helpful http://www.navyformoms.com/group/nukemoms?xg_source=activity. I joined this sight in January and having been gathering as much information as possible!

Thanks for the clarification on the terms. I just found out my son will be a ET. He graduates from BC on 6/1.

My son called today, he is also an MM!

ashers99- My son tells me so little information that I am especially glad your husband seems to be a fount of it.  It was so nice to see that they received the scholastic flag. When I received my son's last letter he did say he had a test that he was "kind of nervous about".  Sounds like they are doing well.

Hi all - just stopping by because my son just arrived in Goose Creek May 5th. He has started classes this week. He is an ET. His buddy is MM. My son wanted ET so we are glad that happened for him. I believe 50% of nukes are MM (according to my sailor) so if you don't know your SR's rate yet, those are your odds.

During Boot Camp they put in their request for ET, EM or MM. From what I understand, this is granted based on need and ASVAB scores. Don't quote me on that - I am just going off what my son has told me.

Before my son went to BC, he did not want Sub duty. Now, he's pretty sure he does. Also, his buddy was adamant about not having sub duty and he too wants to sub duty! Who knew?

Feel free to ask me about the first few weeks of NNPTC since my son is currently going through it right now!

So I have a little more info about school - since my son is going through his second week (ET) right now.

They have 15 hours mandatory study time a week (in Phase I). He said this included mandatory 2 hours a night on school nights (so Sunday through Thursday)

The first week they just had briefing all day in school. He's also had to take a PFA since he got there.

Yesterday was his first real day at school and he texted me late saying he had been at school for 12 hours and was still doing homework.

The cost for a cab to go to Charleston is minimum $35 each way, but they have been getting a group together and splitting the costs.

And for the record, he says, Five Guys is NOT as good as In N Out. :)

Curious how your experiences have been at Goose Creek.  My son is headed there next week, we hope to visit soon after he starts getting some time on the weekends.  Have any of you heard when the school shuts down this year for the holidays?

My son just graduated A school and it was rough for him but he still enjoys the program.  I think about three weeks in he had a little bit of a breakdown but we got through it.  Now he is in "T-Track". He stands watch for 12 hours and then has 24 hrs off.  He is exhausted!! I heard from him about three to five days a week when he was in school. Since he started t-track I have only heard from him twice, in about 3 weeks. I would highly  recommend joining the Nuke Moms group.  Kris and I joined forces and came up with a list of things that he needed but didn't realize he needed until  he got started. If you have any questions please just friend me and let me know. Just keep your shoulders strong and your son will be fine.

I don't have the exact close date for the holidays but one of the moms in the Nuke moms group may.
