N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

I got a letter from my SR just now!!  I'm soooooo happy!!!   He said he passed his PFA (Thank you, God.) He gave me some more info about shipping out after graduation, etc.  I'm so excited I am going to dance the "happy dance!!"

So glad you heard from your SR also!!

Raya:  Not sure I would buy one if your car rental company doesn't offer the transponder.  In that case, I think I would just take lots of dimes, nickels, quarters.  You may not be driving on the toll roads that much.  In fact, there is a way to get to GL without going through the tolls, I have been told.  Your car rental company should be able to direct you that way.

Comment by diannep on May 23, 2013 at 3:33pm

Raya:  I would call your car rental place and ask, but I would assume most if not all do.  Here is what the I-Pass website says about it:

"First, check with your rental car company on its policy for paying tolls. Some rental car companies provide transponders. In such cases, be sure you understand how to use the transponders and how you will be charged for transponder-based tolls.  Inquire about transponder availability and fees with the rental agent.

Second, if your rental car company does not provide a transponder or you do not want to use the transponder they provide, you have two options:

  • Pay the cash tolls.
  • Use your I-PASS or E-ZPass transponder.
Be sure to mount the transponder on the inside of the windshield, next to the rearview mirror, to help ensure that the transponder signal is received.
Review your I-PASS account activity regularly to ensure the charges are accurate.
We do NOT recommend adding rental car license plates to your account.

In the event your transponder signal is not properly read while in the rental car, there is a possibility you will receive a violation notice. The violation notice will be sent to the rental car company, which is the registered owner of the vehicle. The rental car company then has two options: 1) by Illinois law, it may re-assign the violation notice to you based on its record of who was renting the vehicle when the violations were incurred; or 2) it may choose to pay the notice and bill you. If a rental car agency chooses to pay the notice and bill you, you will not be eligible for the settlement guidelines.

Diannep, do all car rental places rent the I-Pass, I rented a car for the weekend. Just wanted to know if all car rental place do. If they don't where can I get one from.

Comment by diannep on May 23, 2013 at 1:25pm

Irene, if you are renting a car, it is worth it (to me) to rent the I-Pass from the car rental place.  You pay a fee for it, but then you don't have to worry about it.  The toll amounts are odd numbers so it can get quite confusing and if you miss one....it gets complicated.  So it is worth it to rent the I-Pass at the car rental!

It is about 35-40 minutes from OHare to GL....in average traffic.  In rush hour, it will take longer.  We flew in mid-afternoon and it wasn't bad.

So glad to hear Poochie is doing ok.

Good morning everybody!  Yes, 3 weeks!  Do you believe it?  I still get weepy every time I write a letter.  I am going to be a disaster 3 weeks from now.  I live on an island (good luck finding water-proof mascara before I leave here).  Maybe at the airport I can find something.  How long does it take to drive from O'Hare to Waukegan?  Someone told me to make sure I stay all the way to the right on the highway so that way I can pay toll booths with coins instead of the electronic passes in the left and center lanes.
