Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

willsmom: Your "refuge" will be on this group! You are right....those with no one in the military just don't understand. They may equate it to a child leaving for college....hmmm.....can't you CALL or TEXT that child? Possibly go see that child? Stay in touch? Isn't your child making his/her own decisions? Very different than being in military bootcamp!
We all "get it" here. So vent when you need to and scream when you need to, ask when you need to and celebrate when you need to! :-) Don't be mad at your friends or co workers...they truly think they understand and want to....but they just can't... :-)

First of all big hugs out to Willsmon for the difficult call and to Joyce0822 for surving the rough seas and still waiting for call or form letter. We are here for you! Willsmom I completely agree with you about this site. It has been such a comfort to me as well. Family and friends have been supportive, but unless your going thru this its just not the same.
I was so happy this morning watching the weather. Looks like our SR get some sunshine and 80 degrees today. Hopefully a little Vitamin D will make them feel a little better. It works for me.

you are so welcome joyce0822! I am so thankfull for this site. I told my work friends how deflated my SR sounded when he called. Their response was , what did you ecpect. You guys get it. You've gotten calls just like that and then later calls when they are better. And you share this with us newbies and our hearts are a little lighter. Thanks to eveyone on this site!!!

joyce0822 - I received the form letter on Sat and a call on Sun. But the only reason he was allowed to call was he was not allowed to give me the "I'm here and safe" call. So hang in there. I bet your letter arrives today :-)

Two weeks ago today my son left, April 16th. Still no call and no form letter yet! I have not heard one word from him other then the 30 sec call when he arrived. I just want to hear his voice!!! I've heard other moms have gotten letters and calls. :(........ I am happy for all of you!!!

For Willsmom - My son was upset the first time he called. But a few days later they gave him another call. He was more upbeat and positive. We had a really nice talk. He apologized for being so upset on the first call. Said they had been up for 48 hours at that point, and he was exhausted. That could explain why your SR was down. Just try to stay positive on the phone. I've learned so much from the other Moms on this site. It has been very helpful. Click around on any links you see to get more info.
