N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

One last thing....do NOT call the number back if you miss the call.  If an RDC happens to answer the phone and you ask for your SR, he/she will get in trouble!

Comment by diannep on April 27, 2013 at 8:29pm

Also, if you have a missed call and no message, it most likely was a supervised "need info" call.  They are not allowed to leave a message on those....they have to call back another time.  I got one of those when my son was there....missed it...no message....googled the number and it came up Medical on RTC.  Uh oh....freaked out....no word from him for a number of days.  When he finally called again (personal call, not supervised info call) he said...Oh, that....there was a question on my medical record but we figured it out.          Wheeew......

Comment by diannep on April 27, 2013 at 8:26pm

Calls can come on any day...at any time!  They also may make "supervised" calls for security/info purposes.  You will know they are supervised because they will be "matter of fact" and tell you they can't talk. But at least you get to hear their voices!  :-)

Comment by ellen0502 on April 27, 2013 at 8:25pm

Calls can be made at any time, except usually not from 7am-1pm on Friday and Sunday.

Additional calls can be earned and any call can be taken away, and not necessarily because it was your SR who did something.

So, look forward to a call on any day at any time, but don't expect a call. :)

Evening.... my SR is ship 9/div 227.  Already booked at The Navy Lodge.  Now the plane tickets. Anyone else's SR in that div?

Thanks for your responses diannep & ellen0502.  I am assuming that he wasn't allowed to call since he didn't :( I am so happy for the couple of moms that received their call from their SR.  I am going to send another card to him just in case.  He has a 300 minute card, I'm sure it will be enough but just thought I would ask just in case.  Are there only certain days to possibly receive a call or is it possible any day of the week?  When he arrived in Chicago, he was told that his first earned call would be 3 weeks.  Tomorrow completes his 2nd week.  I guess I will live with my phone as another appendage from this point on! haha.

Comment by diannep on April 27, 2013 at 7:54pm

As far as how often they can call, that is totally up to their RDCs.

Comment by diannep on April 27, 2013 at 7:49pm

I agree with ellen, JJ4Navy.  Send your SR some cards.  They are able to buy them there at the NEX but they can't just go there whenever they want to.  Saves them money too if you mail them some.  I haven't heard of people calling collect???  So not sure if that is allowed.

Comment by ellen0502 on April 27, 2013 at 7:23pm

You can send them calling cards while they are in BC. I would recommend that you find one that you can reload with minutes. I bought one for my son, when he went to BC, that had 800 minutes, no fees, could be reloaded, and it cost $20.

Comment by JJ4Navy on April 27, 2013 at 6:44pm

thanks diannep!  That eases my mind because I saw that someone got a call & it kind of freaked me out.  Are they only allowed to call off of calling cards or can they call collect? Can we send extra calling cards in case they earn more calls.  I read that they could possibly earn more calls than the standard 3. Can they buy calling cards there?
