Prayers, Delbert, that they find this was a temporary illness and not asthma.  I understand that they have different "levels" on the machine they test with...and some I have heard about get all the way to the last level before showing a problem.

Sure hope that it works out for her!  I know it is not easy waiting through this for her and for you all.  We're all here for you!

Good morning all!

Do you know if she had done the gas chamber Delbert?  I just wonder if that triggered some sort of reaction that decreased lung capacity or if she had been sick etc.

Thanks folks! I  just joined Ship 5 group and they do have  lots of info.  I am astounded by this diagnosis.  You would think that 10 years of  blowing  a trumpet for hours a day, a BA in Music  ed and a masters program in jazz trumpet,   that someone would have noticed a lack of lung capacity.  :(

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on May 30, 2012 at 6:00pm

Delbert59 - I am so sorry to hear this. They do have a machine that they are tested on...I don't know how that works if they are sick already. So sorry.

Please go to the Ship 5 group... diannep provided the link . The Text Column has a lot of information. The waivers are for Legal and Medical (HIPAA) that she has to get signed if you want to be able to be involved and speak with them.

It may look like no one posts but there are moms who have been through the process (several specifically for asthma) on there. If you post they should catch it. Look through the discussions too.

If you need anything let me know and I will see if I can answer it. Please let us know her progress...we are here for you!

I would fight it as well and at least get one or even two other oppinions from doctors to make sure it is asthma. So many other things can look like asthma. I am so sorry you are going through this. I will keep your daughter and you in my thoughts and prayers.

Comment by PaulaP (Ship11/Div 178) on May 30, 2012 at 5:08pm

Delbert, this close to graduation and they are just now thinking this? It could be she has an infection or a cold. They will test her to make sure it's asthma not just assume.  If she has never been diagnosed, I'd believe I'd fight it if possible.

Delbert:  Should add....if you feel she doesn't have asthma, never has, and want to be involved with this situation, your daughter needs to give permission up there for "the powers that be" to talk to you about this.  Only she can request that.  Otherwise, no one at RTC can speak to you about it.  So, if she calls again, ask her about this if she wants you to be involved.

Comment by diannep on May 30, 2012 at 4:46pm

Delbert.  So very sorry to hear this.  Asthma is something the military (all branches) can't accept.  I know of many sent home for this.  I'm so very sorry.  She can appeal their decision, try to get a waiver, etc.  Get on the group on here:

Ship 5 (formerly 17)

There is lots of info for you on there.

Again, so very sorry.

Help! We just got a call from our SR.  She was having some trouble breathing, the docs diagnosed asthma ( a first)  and they are telling her that  she  will be sent home because  you can't have astham and be a Nuke!

What can we do?  What should we do?
