~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

llamotte:  We waited about 45 min for our SR to return from his ship after PIR was over.  They have to go back there to checkout so the time it takes varies.

Someone just reported on the PIR group from last Friday that they made the mistake of driving to Chicago after PIR.  Got caught in awful traffic and only had time for dinner before having to drive in traffic back to GL to get their sailor back on time.  So, like ellen said, taking the train would be a better option.  Just make sure to allow plenty of return time since your sailor cannot be late returning to RTC!  The Navy motto is....if you are ON TIME, you are LATE!  :-)

Awesome - Thanks ellen0502!  I have heard some other moms saying on the NavyMoms site that they waited an 1 1/2 hours fo their kids after PIR???  What is realistic?

llamotte, You should be able to leave base after PIR right away. As for the shuttle to PIR, I would recommend driving to PIR if you are heading into Chicago, and here is why, :) You can park your vehicle at the train station which is just across the street from the RTC, and then take the train to Chicago right after PIR.

Driving into Chicago can be a nighmare, and parking is expensive. There are trains to and from GL to Chicago every hour. Right outside the train station will be dozens of taxis to take you to the Navy Pier, and the bus line. The train is about 3 dollars per person one way, so very inexpensive.  Sitting on the train you can converse and not have to worry about traffic, where you are going etc. Just check the schedule for riding back, take the train the train that returns you an hour earlier than you want to be back to base.

Time back to base will vary and tour sailor will know the time at PIR if not the day before.

I have a question for you Navy Mom Vets regarding Graduation day.

1. At what time can we realistically expect to be off the base after graduation? Although we have rented a car from the airport, we are taking the shuttle onto base from the Ramada. I'm not sure how it works getting off the base yet. I'm assuming there will be a shuttle waiting to take us back to hotel???? There we are planning on getting our rental car and driving into Chicago and going to The Navy Pier.
2. From what I can see we have to have them back to base by 8:30pm. (depending on the unit orders). Correct?
3. Traffic???? I'm assuming Friday, Chicago traffice is going to be rough. How much time should we give to get back to the base?
4. My daughter leaves the very next day for A School in Pensecola. So unless we go to airpot, this will be our only time with her (short to say the least) In your eperience, how much time did you get with your Sailor that day?

In addition to what ellen0502 said, the new Sailors can also have their laptops, cell phone charger, ac adaptor for laptops... They will have to be put into their Navy issued black backpack at the airport.

Comment by ellen0502 on May 19, 2014 at 5:02pm

You can take your sailors their cell phones. Those staying in GL for A School can have them Friday after they have moved over to the TSC side, and those flying out for school can use them while on liberty on Friday, but cannot take them back to the RTC. They can have them again at the airport to take with them to A School.

Comment by proudnavymom on May 19, 2014 at 3:16pm

shiloh, I believe they can get them at the airport if they are leaving for A school. Or after graduation if they are staying at GL for A school.
