Oh Marcy - I'm sorry to hear about your dad. Prayers to your family!
I just booked 3 nights with Courtyard in Waukegan and there is no charge or hold fee until I check out. Very nice people and answered all of my questions on the phone without getting too annoyed. I am paranoid about the trip because I am going alone and have never left Oklahoma before other than Texas. I don't get out much!
@diannep- I am very interested in the Meet N Greet the night before but I didn't ask them about it because I figured it was only at the other hotels on the brochue. Who do I contact to find out more about it? I will look into getting my tickets with SW and prepare myself to pay $100 for a cab to and from the hotel. Yikes!
marcy: So very very sorry! Oh my gosh...prayers for you all.
As far as telling your SR, that decision has to be yours...since you know what is best for her. We suggest that any bad news during bc be saved for after PIR or the I'm a Sailor call....but of course, that is a very individual thing---especially with the death of a family member. Just make the decision you feel is best for her...whether waiting or calling the Red Cross when the time comes. You can get a RTC chaplain involved at that time too.....prayers for all of you.
Are there any hotels that pick you up from the airport and take you back? That plays a big part in choosing where I stay since I am flying alone and attending PIR by myself without a vehicle.
Skyla: Refundable tickets are VERY expensive. You may want to check out Southwest Airlines into Milwaukee or Chicago (Midway). Milwaukee is usually cheaper. Easier drive to RTC...no traffic...straight interstate. Midway is further away with traffic too.
Southwest does not charge a change fee....(I had to change my reservations when my son was in bootcamp...sure wish I had known about Southwest!)...also, first 2 checked bags are free! I just flew with Southwest a couple of weeks ago. Great experience. First flight was delayed, though, and they issued us each a $100 voucher for a future flight.
I would advise all to book hotels now. We are reading on other PIR groups that some are already sold out. There is a water park nearby...so the "suite" hotels go fast. Anyone thinking of Springhill Suites or Residence Inn Waukegan...I suggest you book now. The hotels have very liberal cancellation policies and don't charge you until you are there. Those 2 hotels (along with Courtyard and Candlewood Suites) are close to Sarge's MeetNGreet the night before PIR...and only about 4-5 miles from RTC.
Good Morning to all my new friends. They say when it rains, it pours.. I miss my daughter very much, I'm sure she's doing great there. Just found out my father is terminal and is in a Hospice wing at the hospital. They think he has just a few days. He's in the Chicago area. I guess when he passes, I can call the Red Cross and they will contact my daughter. Not sure if I should wait til PIR to tell her or not. I dont want to take her attention away from the already difficult things she is going through there.
I got my form letter this morning! After a really bad night feeling down about everything. It made the rest of the week :) PIR is 6/22 after all!
Time to book a hotel room and a refundable plane ticket now I guess! WOO HOO!
Good morning to all - I didn't sleep much last night. It was one of those nights, and I swore to myself that I would NOT get on here during the work day - and here I am just checking in! 50 days and counting! Why is it that dads do NOT seem to have the same trouble we moms do? I'd just like him to experience this gnawing emptiness just for a little while, so he would understand.
Good morning!
