Mumof4: Sounds like our sons do have the same responsibility in PIR. No he did not say which week/day they are on. He did say that Sundays are nice because from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. things have become a bit more relaxed and they spend time polishing boots, ironing, writing letters and they get to take a longer shower.
Yep, RACW: They sure do learn to appreciate "home" and "life" when at bootcamp as they are being transformed into sailors! :-)
RACW - I think my son is with your son - he said he was a "greeter" of the high ranking individuals as they entered the drill hall. I wondered what he would be doing in a performance division also - no musical talent at all! :) Glad your son was communicative - did he say what week/day they are on?
I received two letters from my son yesterday. One was six pages long, the other was three pages. Seems to be in great spirits and very busy. He is a section leader and he leads a column of 20 in marching drills. He said that he and the other section leaders get their butts kicked with "intensive training" but he has always liked a good workout so I'm sure he's doing OK in that regard. The 932's started marching a week before any other divisions because of their involvement in the PIR ceremony. At the ceremony he will be one of eight who form a tunnel of sorts and salute the captain as he walks in. (I wondered what he'd be doing since he does not play an instrument). In addition, he is the Mail Petty Officer so he collects and delivers mail daily. He really likes this job a lot as getting mail is the high point of everyone's day and he finds it uplifting. He said "I know now how nice my life was on the outside...but I'm really starting to enjoy this new life as well...and I know that once I'm out of BC, it will only get better." He said there is a lot of yelling, but he is getting somewhat use to it and one of the people who yells also whistles which is nice to hear. He said that his unit has been told they can make phone calls this coming Friday (5-18) if no one messes up before then (I'm not sure if he was referring to the entire 932 division or just his section). So moms...keep those letters coming because it really does make a difference in their day...and keep your phones close on Friday. (Fingers crossed.)
teresac - look in the mailbox today - maybe the letter will come. I haven't had any call either - not really expecting one until maybe next week at 1/2 way point! :)
I just bumped up FTLW's discussion above about the different flags they can earn during bootcamp.
Just try to claim NO NEWS AS GOOD NEWS because that is the way of the Navy! If there is any change in their PIR date, etc...they will make a scripted and supervised call home.
Hoping for some mail or calls for you all today!
So bummed! I just got home from being out of town for a week and and there is no letter and I haven't received a phone call. Starting to get worried :(
