The Keel - the "yearbook" for your Sailor's recruit division - is available for purchase during boot camp, as well as for one year after their graduation date. The publisher in charge of printing and distributing each division's copy of The Keel does not retain them longer than one year.
As these are important pieces of memorabilia, it is advisable that each recruit and his or her family plan prior to boot camp to invest in these items. Set aside money prior to their ship date and keep in mind that you are saving for a piece of your Sailor's history that you will not have the opportunity to reclaim afterward.
I read somewhere else maybe under NavyDads that there are two packages. One comes with the Keel which makes it the better deal. Somewhere I read that the guys could pay with a debit or credit card when they order. Who knew they were even allowed to take them to boot camp? If they pay that way they will get them a few days prior to PIR. If they haven't been paid for we can go the day of PIR and pick them up and pay at that time. I've heard that takes a lot of time so if they can somehow pay when ordering it will save everyone time when our Sailors just want to get going. I wish the Navy would let them pay from their wages...I would be proud to reimburse my son! Anyway maybe some of our veteran moms can fill us in more on this. And I would like to know if the "little black backpack" can be purchased by our SR's before the PIR. I really want to just go to PIR and then sweep my Sailor off and enjoy some time away from the RTC. Sorry for the print at the top I tried to fix it but couldn't after I cut it from the other site.
It was some sort of academic/classroom test that they had Wednesday because my son mentioned a couple of times that he had been studying very hard for it. They couldn't study for a physical test. If none of us got a call thus far regarding it, I assume our boys and girls were successful!
Aaww !! ..to: Terrysaproudmom- you said it!! my son has a "smirk of a smile too" and I cant wait to see it! I am so proud of all of them!! I can't believe the change ALREADY in these few short weeks!! I know what you mean about the letter writing etc, the usual text I got from our son was "K" when he would answer me!! now he says..."keep the letters coming",etc, etc!!!
Framing is a fun idea. This is only the second letter my SR has ever written to us in his whole life. The first was an email he sent up from his cell phone to tell us he was joining the Navy and why. I guess he was a little afraid to tell us at first. Thank God for the DEP program which allowed us time to accept it and be supportive. I've started a file folder for all his Navy correspondences. He was never much for writing or talking on the phone. Boy has 2.5 weeks changed that. Can you imagine how much they will be changed by PIR. Ladies we are watching men in the making!! :-) Just so he doesn't lose that adorable smirk of a smile!!!!
