Fireteam - Where is the meet and greet held?  Is it all ships and divisions or should each group form their own?
Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on June 12, 2011 at 4:07am

Glad some of you are able to arrive early to PIR...I did that too. I was coming from the west coast and spent that whole first day traveling and was glad for the second day to rest and get oriented. It also allowed me to be able to go to the Meet and Greet the night before PIR.

LaLa has a very good point-I LOVED my GPS BUT, I did lose her once or twice in a tunnel...and was concerned when the last day was rain, with lghting and thunder...she was a troop though...and I did have a mapquest printout to get to the airport.

YAY! You started your Divisional discussions! Good girls! Start meeting each other up there. It may seem like a lot, going between the main group and your divisional discussion, but up there you'll be able to connect much easier as a division. Sometimes the main group page can get "long" in a day...especially as we get closer to your PIR. The last two weeks y'all are posting fiends! I've missed a day and had to go back 10+ pages on some groups!

CaitlynBenCarmen-Glad you got a call and that your check will be there! The Navy has been very good about expediting the SR's pay. My son arrived at the end of the month like this PIR groups and he was paid on the 15th too.

As soon as they get their RMPO Recruit Mail Petty Officer qualified the mail will start to flow...just keep sending them! It'll be like Christmas when they receive a whole batch!

@Terry...Monday is *my* birthday, too (41)!  Happy Birthday to you.  I, too, thought what a wonderful present it would be to get that *first* letter on my birthday!

@Terry'saproumom(ship02-div936)

I have been living off of consignment stores for a while. I know it sounds really horrible, but whatever you didn't sell I definitely recommend taking to thrift stores, pawn shops. They take the weirdest stuff and you can haggle 'em a little. We had a garage sale and on my stuff alone I made 75ish, rest was like another 100 or so.

Anywho, we plan to drive. Even though the drive is (only ha!) 9 hours, we plan to take two days to drive. I have a 9 month old daughter who will just over 10 months when we drive and my mom has issues with her shoulder and yeah but basically the trip to fly + plus = $600+ if we drive it's like $300 if we're really smart about stuff.

Was up until 1:30am, then up again to take my garage sell items to sis-in-law's house.  Only made $23, visions of making some airfare money shot!  I left there at 1pm hoping for that all important first letter...no such luck, no call either of course.  I am still thinking that our ship/div. didn't get writting priviledges last Sunday. Maybe a call tomorrow.  Monday is my birthday (59) hoping for a letter or call that would me the best gift this year.  DUKESMOM: We are flying into Chicago/Midway at 8:30pm.  Will pick up our rental car and drive to Ramada-Waukegan.  Will rest up Thursday and get to look around a bit before the PIR.  I also didn't want to depend on airlines, weather, or anything else to threaten our not getting there.

I just booked my Amtrak tickets and hotel room!  All that is left is the car rental.  I looked at flying and Amtrak (coach and sleeper rooms), and settled on Amtrak coach seats.  I have flown overnight once to London and back in similar seats, so I know I can rest, and the cost was *half* that of flying or buying the sleeper rooms.  Both ways will be overnight travel, so I'll get to sleep the majority of the trip away.  I'm so ready to go!!!!

I have got one call but I believe he BEGGED them to call because it's me and my 9 month old daughter and I have no income. He wasn't supposed to talk long but he did tell me that he had two letters already written and I don't think he was able to send them out yet... He wanted to call to reassure us that there WAS going to be a check for us on the 15th. Anywho - My mom is really good about getting hotels on priceline.com or stuff like that last minute. Hope to meet you at Grad Sharon!!

Hi Caitlybencarmen, my son is on ship 02 div 936, have you heard anything yet? I havent gotten any letters or calls, just the form letter. I hope i hear from him soon. his g/f and I are trying to finalize the travel plans, so hopefully i wont have to sell any body parts for plane fare! LOL, just kidding! hi to everyone else, as usual, only on for my 10 minutes and have to go do something else, wish i could spend more time on here, when is the next 26 hour day?

Just from my experience of being at PIR July 23rd last year I would advice you all to get a good street map of the Chicago area. GPS is fantastic but when the roads close due to flooding the GPS just tries to take you back to the interstate. Having a map would have been very helpful to us. 35 miles in 4 hours was NOT fun :-)

DukesMom:  It usually is better to post a discussion group for the division --upabove-- rather than a separate group.  Hard to keep track when you go "group hopping."  So you may want to think about doing that.  You can see above where several from other divisions have started discussions for their divisions.
