Safe travel for everyone! Exciting days ahead for you all! We veterans will try to keep checking this site, so if you have questions or problems, post.
Remember....for those going to the airport to meet up with sailors on Sat....be sure to get info from your sailor on PIR Day on WHICH AIRPORT he/she is departing from. Since they are usually bussed early in the morning from RTC, plan to go out there early to wait with them.
You can meet up with them at the USO at Ohare where they will be well taken care of. If going to Midway, the USO is past security, so your sailor will need to meet you before security...he/she is allowed to do this...just pick a time to meet or hopefully he/she can borrow a cell at the airport to call you.
Please be sure to go with your sailor to the airlines counter with ID to obtain a gate pass to wait at the gate with your sailors until flight time. You will see some wonderful treatment in the airports of your sailors....some get standing ovations as they are announced to board their plane. Others may have meals paid for....sigh....
Remember....please get to PIR EARLY! I would suggest that you are in a car line by a little after 6, or on the first shuttle from your hotel. You can take snacks, etc...it is worth it to get there that early and choose your seating. Lala always reminds you all to please experiment with your cameras during this time....wish I had done that...most of my piks came out dark!
And, most importantly, ENJOY!
Congrats to all the new Sailors and to all of you. I can't believe one yr ago I was packing my bags and leaving for July 23rd PIR. I will never forget how proud I was to hear my daughter sing with the choir. Our PIR group has made a private facebook page and we are having a reunion Saturday night to catch up on what all of us and our Sailors are doing now. I am so excited about it.
Remember when you get to Great Lakes the day or evening before PIR be sure and check out the streets and become familiar with your route to the base. On the morning of PIR you will see cars lined up to get to base in the far right lane. However, that lane ends and you have to merge left. So get in the lane to the left of the far right one and you won't have to merge and you will by-pass a lot of the cars and cut your wait time down a lot.
If you have a digital camera take some practice shots when you get in the PIR hall. Change the settings and look at the outcome to make sure you get the best possible pictures for the lighting and indoor environment you are taking the pictures in.
And most of all, have fun with your sailor and travel safely :-) Lala
